Rapid Bay - South Australia

in #teamaustralia6 years ago (edited)

The Fleurieu Peninsula is home to many wonderful beaches, and Rapid Bay is no exception. Located 100 kilometres south of Adelaide, Rapid Bay is truly the ideal spot to take the family. With an array of things to see and do, you'll want to make it your next day-trip or holiday destination.

There are so many things we love about Rapid Bay. Here is just a few of them.

The Underwater Wonderland

Rapid Bay is a popular place for snorkelers and scuba divers to visit. As you enter the water beneath the jetty, you'll be greeted by an amazing underwater wonderland. There are so many species of fish and marine life living in these waters, and you'll want to see them all.

In particular, Rapid Bay is famous for having the illusive Leafy Seadragons. These beautiful creatures are an amazing sight to see, and are something that is unique to the southern coastline of Australia.

The Experiencing Marine Sanctuaries frequently run guided snorkel tours around Rapid Bay jetty. Follow their Facebook page to make sure you keep up to date with all their snorkel events so you don't miss out on the next one.

The Activities

There's lots to see and do at Rapid Bay, but most of the activities are within the water. As we stated above, snorkeling is a popular past time for a lot of people who visit this beach. Though snorkelers aren't the only ones you'll find around the jetty. Rapid bay is also a popular fishing destination. It's not uncommon to see the Jetty lined with eager fisherman.

As with any other beach, Rapid Bay is also great for swimming. The cool, blue water is so inviting on a hot day, you wont be able to resist. You may even see a few dolphins while you're out too.

Brief History of Rapid Bay

In 1836 a ship called the Rapid made its first stop in South Australia. It stopped at what is now known as Rapid Bay. When Colonel William Light first landed at Rapid Bay it was considered for the capital of South Australia until the Adelaide Plains were discovered, leaving Rapid Bay to be the quiet home for marine life it is today.

It's Holiday Time

If you're on the lookout for your next must-visit holiday destination, then make sure you check out the Rapid Bay Camp Ground. This beachfront camping ground boasts amazing beach views, as well as affordable rates for camp sites. There are electric barbecues, toilet facilities, grassed areas, a playground, and you can even bring the dog with you. Just keep in mind that campfires are not allowed at Rapid Bay Camp Ground.

If you're happy to go out a little further you'll also find the Second Valley Caravan Park, and Camping sites at Deep Creek Conservation Park. The Second Valley Caravan Park has a wide range of different accommodation options, varying from un-powered campsites to deluxe cabins that house 9 people.

If you'd rather something a little quieter, Deep Creek Conservation park has several different camp grounds across the park. Some of these have very limited facilities, though Stringybark campground has toilet and shower facilities available to campers. Just be aware that you wont get phone reception within the Stringybark sites.

What Else is there?

If you're looking to do some exploring while you're down on the Fleurieu, you'll find a lot. As we said above, Second Valley isn't too far away. Second Valley is another amazing spot for swimming, snorkeling and exploring. With a small shop as well, you can even stop past for dinner before heading back to your campsite or cabin.

Deep Creek Conservation Park is more than just for camping. There are plenty of walking trails around the park as well. If you're game enough, or you have a 4 wheel drive, you may also want to make the trip down to the picturesque Blowhole Beach. You'll see masses of kangaroos and kookaburras, and maybe even an echidna or two. The Waterfall Hike within Deep Creek is also an incredible walk, though some parts may be a bit challenging.

So the next time you're looking for a relaxing, quiet destination then take a look at Rapid Bay. The beautiful scenery will certainly wow you and the rest of your family.

If you have somewhere else you think we should visit, let us know! We love exploring our amazing state.
