Apple releases iOS 11.2.6 in a bid to fix iPhone crash bug

Apple just recently released a new software update to tackle a bug that crashes messaging apps on iOS which was discovered as of late. The new update which has been made available today includes iOS 11.2.6 for iPhonew and, watchOS 4.2.3 for Apple Watch, tvOS 11.2.6 for Apple TV, and macOS 10.13.3 for Mac.

The primary function of the update is to fix the Telugu character bug that crashed Apple’s Springboard just immediately after a message with the said character was received by an iOS user. The bug at first seemed to affect iMessage, but it also affected other apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook Messenger, WeChat among other messaging apps.

In its iOS release note, Apple stated that the update fixes an issue where using certain character consequences could bring about a crash on apps as well as issues where some third-party apps could fail to connect to external accessories. The watchOS and macOS updates also had a like condition of a character bug that caused apps to crash when received on an iOS device.

It was observed that the bug only impacted upon devices running iOS 11.2.5, but those running iOS 11.3 beta were not affected by the Telugu character bug. It was obvious that Apple had already created an update to fix the bug or have it removed completely and it was also widely accepted that a supplemental update will be released by the company to tackle the problem. Apple last week made a statement that it would release a new software update to address the issue and the purpose was to keep users from waiting for the release of iOS 11.3

This however is not the first time that iOS has been affected by a bug that impacts the messaging apps in particular. In 2015, a tiny string text disabled iMessage while a 5 second video crashed iPhones in 2016. Also, Apple’s mobile system was struck by a ChaiOS bug that could freeze any iPhone with a single link.
