Why Foldable Smartphones Could Become The Next Big Thing

With all the recent hype around foldable smartphones, it seems like the tech industry finally has something extraordinary to work on after the fully bezel-less hype that we all witnessed in 2018.

The idea of foldable devices might not be new, but it's practical implication certainly is. A company named Royole launched the world's first foldable smartphone "FlexPai" on October 31, 2018 in Beijing.

Though being the first, let's just say that the phone itself is not something you would want to buy or even use as your daily driver. Nonetheless, it's the first step to something potentially revolutionary.

Is Flexibility The Future of Smartphones?

At this point, it's too soon to make any predictions about the future of flexible smartphones or any kind of electronic smart device for that matter, because we are still no where near our idea of a fully-functioning flexible device that could still work just as good as our current smartphones, if not more.

But the thing about innovation is, any potentially dramatic change in the tech industry sounds ridiculous at first, but as the technology improves further and further, it becomes more than possible to make that change become a reality and make it available for the general public.

Doing so, the prices of those products also drop down eventually as they start to get produced in large numbers which cuts down on cost of production. That's how all innovations slowly become the new normal.

The same happened with bezel-less displays and if we continue investing, somewhere in the future, the same is also possible for flexible and foldable smartphones and even smart-TVs!

But Why Though?

A lot of people don't really see a reason to make our smartphones flexible in the first place. But this again, is not new. Similar questions were asked when Samsung first presented their idea of having the side bezel removed to have additional screen real-estate in their 'Edge' series.

Now, in 2019, pretty much every single smartphone company is competing to come up with ideas for a truly bezel-less smartphone display because it makes the phone smaller and easier to hold without sacrificing any screen-to-body ratio.

The same is probably going to be in the case of flexible smartphones. We might not know exactly why do we need it, but as the tech slowly progresses, we are sure to make good use out of it.

For one, it could mean that we no longer would need multiple smart devices. Imagine unfolding your smartphone and having it work like a tablet with better multi-tasking capabilities and even better, being able to use your primary camera for selfies and completely ditching the front camera.

Even though it might take a long time to cover that gap, to go from "just a foldable screen" to "laptop in my pocket", flexibility can most definitely prove to be the next biggest innovation we will witness in the near future!
