Learning reImagined for the Future

Have you ever asked yourself ...

What would our young people become if we'd replace:
Competition with collaboration
Memorization with real life experiences
Fear of exams with action based projects solving community problems in their local area becoming active citizens
Obedience with curiosity
Being taught with debates / storytellingx.jpg

I still remember my days back in school (i'm the smiley one in the picture, 4th at the top 😅), memorizing the information, being told to regurgitate other people's ideas rather than to use critical thinking, not understanding the information in-depth because all subjects where thought separately rather than as a whole - chemistry, physics, biology, not knowing how to act when faced with challenging situations, always competing with my colleagues and thinking that my WORTH as a human BEING is reflected by my GRADES! Sounds familiar?

Learning is never ending, we learn everyday, either by experience or from those that we interact with on a daily basis. Learning should be PLAYful, insightful and current.

I was lucky enough to find my tribe and looking back at my journey, I've developed all my life skills by volunteering, helping the community and by taking part in a summer adventure camp. BEST EXPERIENCE EVER! And I wish more young people would experience this, rather than staying on SNAPCHAT all day long. I'm not saying all of them are doing this, but the system is designed to hinder creativity and imagination.

If you haven't seen this legendary TedTalk, then is worth watching it:

I am very passionate about education and learning, as I know that if we get this right, it would not only bring value to more people at a local level but it will have a global impact. Just imagine this for a second: children that are happy to learn, that are curious about the world and how it works, understanding that people have different perspectives, that come together to find solutions for their local community and at the same time develop those much needed soft skills like communication, team work, collaboration, creativity, resilience, emotional intelligence. This is my WHY and this is the reason together with Future Leaders Club we've created an event that is looking to disrupt the norm.

In an age of exponential technologies, new models of work and entrepreneurship, location independence, and new definitions of what it means to lead a meaningful life - it’s time to reThink the learning environment.

It’s time to reImagine learning, education, curriculum and community for a new age.

We call it Futurize.

Joanna, is this event something that I could do a short talk about block chain?

hi @starkerz, definitely! Would be great to link block chain to education and the possibilities of using this tech to create a more inclusive learning environment.

Upvoted. Besides conferences, how else can people get involved?

hi @tradesharpe, thank you for your comment. Would be great to find out other people's perspectives re today's education system and in terms of the event we are looking for speakers, sponsors and #edtech startups to showcase their products.

I can't wait for #futurize in Birmingham UK on 11 November 2017!! will be a great event with great range of current, cutting edge speakers!! I notice that this post also got the attention of some very helpful whales!! I cant wait to hear more about this event as we go forward!! :)

In the corporate world learning is changing faster then in the educational world:( video, charltbots, gamefication, mooc etc is starting to be adopted in lms but schools need to follow government plans and therefor not agile enough to keep up.Hope this will change soon

Hi @myonelinelive, yes this is very true and this is one of the reasons why I want to bring both worlds together to share best practices and collaborate, so that we can enrich the student experience.
