Howto enhance your Email privacy with encryption

in #technology6 years ago

Hi Steemians!

This time I want to show you the Email hosting service ProtonMail.

Due to the leaks of Edward Snowden and Wikileaks, every user should be aware that the big companies don't know the term "privacy" for user data. In fact, some of these companies were founded just for the purpose of collecting data.

Because of this, each user should ask how they can increase their data security?
An important thing to increase security is to encrypt your messages, however most of open source encryption software is not that easy to set up.

Therefore ProtonMail provides an easy way for email encryption.
ProtonMail is incorporated in Switzerland and all of their servers are located in Switzerland. This means all user data is protected by strict Swiss privacy laws.
Protonmail was developed by researchers at CERN and MIT to provide secure encrypted email service for the masses.

Statement from pricing section. "ProtonMail is community software, funded by the community, and open source. We do not show ads or make money by abusing your privacy. Instead, we depend on your support to keep the service running. Revenue from paid accounts is used to further develop ProtonMail and support free users such as democracy activists and dissidents who need privacy but can't necessarily afford it."

You can sign up for a free account or support them like I do, with an paid account.

Accepted payment methods are Credit Card, PayPal, Bitcoin.

Open Source

in August 13.2015 they have published their code as open source.

End-to-End Encryption

Messages are stored on ProtonMail servers in encrypted format. They are also transmitted in encrypted format between our servers and user devices. Messages between ProtonMail users are also transmitted in encrypted form within our secure server network. Because data is encrypted at all steps, the risk of message interception is largely eliminated.

What do you think about Email encryption? How do you handle this topic?
I think, with this tool anyone can diminish the power of the datamonster a bit ;)
Thank you for reading.

I use email encryption, but find that open-source self-hosted software solutions are better, such as GnuPG (https://www.gnupg.org/download/index.html) are more trustworthy.

Thanks for the hint. I agree with you, but for casual users it could be difficult to setup the selfhosted software.

Maybe, but you can get a website for under $5 dollars a month – and it's 2 clicks to install GnuPG.
