WS72: performance

in #technology8 years ago

Have you ever dreamed of being able to work anywhere in the world? More and more people say good bye to their offices and start a new life, where you have no limits in terms of time or place. With mobile workstation WS72, you can join them.

I don’t want to simply base this idea on the specs which, by the way, meet requirements of the professionals: latest Intel® Xeon® E3-1505M v5 processor, professional 3D graphics with NVIDIA Quadro M2000M, Intel® CM236 chipset, up to 32GB DDR4-2133 ECC memory and up to 2 x 128GB M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD + 1TB (SATA) 7200 rpm.

My intention is to prove it through numbers. Therefore, I’ve summarized 2 independent media reviews below to show that WS72 is not just mobile and good looking. Most importantly, it completes the work smoothly and quickly.

CPU and RAM

Xeon E3-1505M v5 differs from i7-6700HQ by that fact that it can work with ECC memory which is an obvious advantage for professional users working with lots of data. You don’t want your rendering process suddenly (due to RAM error) discontinue and not save. To make sure things like that doesn’t happen, WS72 includes ECC.

Computer Shopper ran PCMark 8 and Cinebench R15 where they saw how close WS72 was to the top position among its competitors: 3,508 and 729 points, respectively.

Ferra.ru ran Cinebench R15 and x264 HD Benchmark 4.0 where WS72 performed better than many similar models: 676 points in the first one and 42.7 FPS in the second one.

Below is the AIDA64 testing of WS72’s 32GB DDR4-2133 RAM. The results are quite good as well: 30,098 MB/s read speed and 31,600 MB/s write speed.

To continue testing CPU, Computer Shopper transcoded 5-minute 1080p video to a smartphone format using Handbrake 0.9.9 and measured the execution time. The result: 1 minute and 3 seconds.

They also ran Photoshop CS6 and applied a series of 11 complex filters and effects to a standard JPEG test image and summed up the total execution time. The result: 2 minutes and 55 seconds.

Ignoring 1-second difference we can admit that WS72 is on the top.

GPU

M2000M is based on GM107 chip and includes 640 CUDA cores, 128-bit bus and 4GB GDDR5 VRAM with up to 80GB/s bandwidth.

Computer Shopper ran 3DMark test which shows GPU’s rendering capabilities for sequence of highly detailed gaming-style 3D graphics. Once again, WS72 is quite close to being the best: 18,041 in Cloud Gate and 1,965 in Fire Strike Extreme.

They then went further and ran Valley 1.0. Here you and your PC will be taken to a beautiful world of nature to see to clear and accurate your system can show the details of every small part of flora.

With 86.5 FPS on Medium Quality settings and 26.5 FPS in Ultra Quality settings WS72 with M2000M shows satisfying results.

Temperature

Slim (!) WS72 doesn’t overheat thanks to MSI exclusive Cooler Boost 3 technology with dual fans effectively dissipating heat and winning to be “the coolest” among Acer, Lenovo and some MSI Gaming models: 76 degrees in both CPU and GPU and 41 degree in storage.

 Conclusion

Computer Shopper: “Judging from the machines that have crossed our test bench in the last couple of months, competition in the mobile workstation space is heating up. The WS72 brings some of MSI's traditional strengths— stylish design, garish keyboard lighting—to the category, while being more portable than most of its 17.3-inch cousins.”

Ferra.ru: Easy formula: light x slim + mobile x powerful = WS72.
It’s also cool and efficient, thanks to Cooler Boost 3 and M.2 NVMe SSD in Super Raid 4.
