What is VFX????

In filmmaking, visual effects (abbreviated VFX) are the processes by which imagery is created or manipulated outside the context of a live action shot.

Visual effects involve the integration of live-action footage and generated imagery to create environments which look realistic, but would be dangerous, expensive, impractical, or impossible to capture on film. Visual effects using computer-generated imagery have recently become accessible to the independent filmmaker with the introduction of affordable and easy-to-use animation and compositing software.

VFX or Visual Effects are a way of mixing real film shooting with false or animated images. For instance, a movie that shows the hero jumping off the ground and flying into the air, is created using VFX. Almost every single movie these days uses VFX. Categories

Visual effects may be divided into at least four categories:

Matte paintings and stills

Digital or traditional paintings or photographs which serve as background plates for 3D characters, particle effects, digital sets, backgrounds.

Digital effects

Digital effects (commonly shortened to digital FX or FX) are the various processes by which imagery is created or manipulated with or from photographic assets. Digital effects often involve the integration of still photography and computer-generated imagery (CGI) to create environments which look realistic but would be dangerous, costly, or impossible to capture in camera. FX is usually associated with the still photography world in contrast to visual effects which is associated with motion film production.

According to VES handbook:
Visual effects (commonly shortened to Visual FX or VFX) is the term used to describe any imagery created, altered, or enhanced for a film or other moving media that cannot be accomplished during live-action shooting. In other words, much of the art of visual effects takes place in post-production, after primary image capture is complete. Visual effects can be added to live-action, captured through techniques such as matte painting; rear- and front-screen projection; miniature or forced perspective sets; computer graphic objects, characters, and environments; and compositing of images recorded in any number of ways. The recent explosion in digital tools that make flawless compositing, digital sets, and fully computer-generated characters possible and accessible to moving image makers at all levels has made visual effects a standard part of every moving image maker’s tool kit.

Timing

Visual effects are often integral to a movie's story and appeal. Although most visual effects work is completed during post-production, it usually must be carefully planned and choreographed in pre-production and production. Visual effects primarily executed in Post-Production with the use of multiple tools and technologies such as graphic design, modeling, animation and similar software, while special effects such as explosions and car chases are made on set. A visual effects supervisor is usually involved with the production from an early stage to work closely with production and the film's director design, guide and lead the teams required to achieve the desired effects.

Why is VFX so Important?

VFX, simply said, are special effects used to give depth to the visual representation of the story and have been used in films in one form or the other almost since the first movies were made. Since that time visual effects have been used frequently and not just for special effects. Some movies used matte paintings to add ceilings that were non-existent on the sets. Visual effects have continued to evolve to provide sights not viable to actually film.

With the advent of digital and computer graphics as tools for visual effects, artists are now able to have control over their images in a way not possible before. These are in addition to their toolbox of previous techniques including models and miniatures when desired. Almost all films coming out of Hollywood use visual effects to some extent and many independent films include visual effects. Keep in mind that visual effects are not just for science fiction and fantasy films. They can be used extensively in period films and even in present day comedies. Some examples of the movies where VFX has been used quite extensively are:

“Seeing is believing”, and making things believable is no easy task. Making seamless and photo realistic renders is the most sought after objective for VFX artists.

How are VFX made?

Adding Visual Effects is not a one man job. It requires quite a lot of smaller milestones that need to be achieved first. Treating a video is a procedure. Different companies have varied procedures depending on the size and number of shots to be completed and also the number of people involved.

Matchmove, Rotoscoping, Modeling, Animation, Lighting/Rendering, Compositing are some of the steps involved while adding VFX. One need not know each and every step completely but can rather have a specialisation for and one or two of these.
