The Impact Of Technology On Relationships

Technology is a great way for us to communicate with our loved ones, but it can also put a strain on our relationships. Even if we are texting all the time, we’re always wondering when the other person is going to text back. Then our minds begin to wander if he or she doesn’t respond right away. We double text. We go on social media to see if our partner is on there. We call. And all this happens only about an hour since their last response.

Maintaining a successful relationship isn’t easy. We all know that. We know that we need to be open, honest, and loyal to our partners to keep each other happy. We know that keeping secrets and manipulating our partners will most likely not end well. We know that we need to communicate with our partners in some way, whether it’s over the phone, in person, or on Skype. We know how
important this communication is, yet somehow it always becomes a struggle for couples to remain close.

We have access to the single, arguably most important device in modern society: the cell phone. Everybody carries their cell phone on them all the time. It’s not like in middle school or elementary school when you had to wait for someone to call your house, and even then you might not be able to get to the phone. But today, if you don’t answer your phone, there’s only a small list of reasons why you didn’t answer, like being in class, working, hanging out with friends, or driving, to name a few. But we usually assume the worst: that our partner doesn’t want to talk to us anymore.

This doesn’t apply to all couples, though. Usually two people who have been in a serious relationship for a long time don’t seems to mind as much if there isn’t an immediate response. But if you’re just “talking” to somebody, or even just beginning a relationship, you probably would feel a little anxious if the other person did not respond within an hour or so.

This is why it’s so hard to begin- and maintain- a relationship with the technology we have. We have grown so used to having most of the world at our fingertips that we expect an immediate response from the person we are interested in. It’s great that we have cell phones for anything we may need, but it’s arguable that they put a lot of pressure on relationships, especially new ones.
