Augmented reality (AR) refers to the technology which expands our physical world and adds digital-layer information in it. AR appears in view of an environment in existence and adds videos, sounds, and graphics to it. AR doesn’t create the entire artificial environments to replace real environment with a virtual one. It views the real-world environment with computer-generated images that are superimposed, ultimately changing the reality perception.
The term “Augmented reality” came up way back in 1990. It was first commercially used by military and television. With the influx of smartphones and Internet, AR has rolled out the second wave and it mostly relates to interactive concept nowadays. There is a direct projection of 3D models onto physical things. Various apps of Augmented Reality tend to impact the entertainment industry, our habits, and social life.

How Augmented Reality works

Augmented Reality for a majority of us implies a huge technical side. For a particular range of data that include animations, images, 3D models, and videos, AR may be used and people realize the result in both synthetic and natural light. Users are also aware of being in a real-world advanced by computer vision.AR can be demonstrated on various devices such as glasses, screens, mobile phones, handheld devices, and head-mounted displays. It also involves technologies like Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (S.L.A.M. ), depth tracking, and the following components as well:

  • Sensors and cameras – it involves collecting user interaction data and sending it to be processed. Cameras on scan the surroundings and with this information, a device is able to locate physical objects to generate 3D models. This may include special duty cameras such as Microsoft Hololens, or the common smartphone cameras to take videos or pictures.

  • Processing - AR devices should eventually act like computers, something the modern smartphones have already done. In the same way, they need a GPU, CPU, RAM, flash memory, a GPS, Bluetooth/WiFi, and so on. These enable them to be in a position of measuring speed, direction, orientation in space, and angle.
  • Projection -This involves a miniature projector on Augmented reality headsets, which gets data from the sensors and projects digital content onto a surface for viewing. The usage of projections in AR is yet to be fully invented for use in commercial products and services.
  • Reflection - Some Augmented reality devices have mirrors that assist eyes to view virtual images. Some consist of an “array of small curved mirrors” and some reflect light to cameras and to the user's eye using double-sided mirrors. The purpose of these reflection paths is to do a proper alignment of images.

Applications of Augmented Reality

Augmented reality complements our day to day activities in many ways. For example, the most common applications of AR is in gaming. New games of AR offer greater experiences to players, and some also promote more active outgoing ways of life. Gaming platforms are have been moved to real life from virtual spheres, and players are actually performing certain activities.
AR in retail acts to bring better retention and engagement of customers, brand awareness, as well as more sales. Some features also help customers to make wiser purchases by offering product data with 3D models of any color or size.Real-estate also benefits from Augmented Reality through 3D tours of houses and apartments and, this can be manipulated to make amendments to some parts.

Other potential areas where Augmented reality may be applied include:

  • Education- provides interactive models for training and learning purposes for all subjects.
  • Healthcare or Medicine- It helps in diagnosing, monitoring, training, localizing, and much more.
  • Military- It assists in advanced navigation and in real time marking of objects.
  • It is also applied to Arts, installations, visual arts, and music.Tourism-it helps in getting directions, data on destinations, navigation, and sightseeing objects.
  • Broadcasting- enhances live events as well as event streaming by overlaying of content.
  • Industrial design- Helps in visualizing, calculating and modeling.

Conclusion
Augmented Reality has been a ‘game changer’ for technology as smartphone penetration has grown exponentially and the app store has also been reinvented. AR on mobile has started a new era of connectivity between digital devices and the physical world. This has opened up a hidden world of more content in things surrounding us. This has taken the experience of looking down at your mobile phone, with a disconnection from everyday, and makes you see the world using a different lens.
