The Leftovers review

in #television6 years ago

In a previous review, I had bemoaned the lack of really groundbreaking television shows beginning their run this decade. There have been a few, yes, but most of the supposedly best shows - Fargo, Game of Thrones, House of Cards, Better Call Saul, Stranger Things etc - have become nothing but rehashes of old formulae. Really polished takes on them, sure, but ultimately safe and refusing to push the boundaries of the medium. Yeah, I'm not much of a fan of TV shows in general, but the truly exceptional ones are must-have experiences even for me. The Leftovers promises to be one of them.

The Leftovers is somewhat a cross between Twin Peaks - the small-town-supernatural-mystery and Six Feet Under - relationship-melodrama. The Leftovers was co-created by Damon Lindelof of Lost fame, and there is undeniably thematic similarities between them. The Leftovers ends up being a far more mature and sophisticated interpretations of the same root ideas.

It has always been a strong drama - right from the pilot. However, for long stretches of Season 1 and Season 2, things always delved into psychological thriller/drama clichés. Still, there was always a unique twist and a gentle treatment that set it apart from most current TV shows. In addition, the acting was outstanding at every moment, the music was pitch perfect at all times.

However, it is with Season 3 that The Leftovers ascends to something truly special. Immediately, there's no filler material. None of the standard fare that dragged some episodes of S1 and S2 are gone. There are only 8 episodes in Season 3, and for good reason! As an aside, I have always felt 13 episodes were far too long for most TV. 6 to 8 seems like the ideal number - how it is done in Europe.

Each episode is memorable and iconic, with its own set of unique charms and twists. Every single actor in the ensemble is firing on all cylinders, a cast far ahead of anything else on TV currently - save for The Deuce.

Pretty much all of drama - whether film, literature, television or games - revolve around the idea that people make stupid mistakes. Most often, good people experiencing bouts of irrationality. The Leftovers is no different, of course. However, where it really innovates in making said mistakes and people's reactions utterly fascinating and sometimes quite bizarre. It is an utterly human show, with an absolute commitment to exploring the diversity of the human condition.

Most of the episodes in the latter half of Season 3 are totally off the hook. They are wild, bizarre, and explore things never seen before on TV. It's not quite enigmatic and esoteric like Twin Peaks. It has its own kind of madness, which is consistent with some moments from previous seasons. However, this time, writers show absolute confidence in committing and seeing through pretty unorthodox concepts.

TV shows have long offered closure in their final season. It's something that just works, and has always worked. Some rebelled, but they went the other extreme - such as The Sopranos - taking a stand against the idea of an ending. Many modern TV shows do offer closure, but in a bittersweet manner. The Leftovers, however, takes an immaculately well balanced approach. The finale does offer pretty clear closure, but at the same time, leaves every question unanswered and open for interpretation. A special mention for Carrie Coon's final monologue - one of the finest moments of acting in the history of filmed entertainment. One of those rare occasions that shows "tell, don't show" can triumph over the age-old mantra of "show, don't tell".

And that's where the beauty and innovation of The Leftovers lies. It's a show that asks a lot of questions, but makes sure that it is never about the answers. It doesn't matter what the answers are, all that matters is how us humans cope with having a barrage of questions over us. Yeah, that's obvious, so what does any of that have to do with a TV show? I know it doesn't make sense, but please watch The Leftovers, you'll know exactly what I mean.

Sort:

I'm still trying to make up my mind whether I liked The Leftovers or not. It was definitely way out there. The problem I have with such shows (and Damon Lindelof in particular): Season by season, they're trying to pile on more mysteries, until it all ends like a big truck in a tiny cul-de-sac. Things get stuck, there is no real resolution, and neither time nor money for a proper wrecker to pull the truck out again.

It's been a while since I watched the show, but I don't remember getting closure in the finale. In any event, the way to the end is entertaining. To watch how a society gets frayed at the edges and eventually descends into terror by dealing with universal grief is highly engaging.

Black Mirror was mentioned already. My suggestion for an entertaining "out-there" series is Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams. It's a British show, first-tier actors, and I believe it was picked up by Amazon internationally. Those w/o Amazon can go to https://putlocker-hd.is/tvshows/philip-k-dicks-electric-dreams/ (CAUTION: Site has some very annoying and questionable pop-under ads.)

Leftovers is one of the most intriguing TV shows ever created. Almost in every episode you would go WTF, something rarely seen anywhere. That ferry boat episode was insane. The show will be missed.

That and the final international assassin episode. Totally wild, yet so coherent and emotion.

The leftovers is one of those shows when the soundtrack makes the scene SO much better and even memorable. This show would not be the same without its song.

Those dialog wouldn’t be as touching without it’s song.

I really liked the series, the finale wasn’t as crazy as the Lost finale but it was good.

Ps: have you checked black mirror series? It’s one of my favorites and 100% original

Yes, I have been watching Black Mirror since it first aired in 2011. I'm afraid I find it a little bit inconsistent. Some episodes are awesome - some of the best on TV - but others disappoint. Still, one of the best shows on TV. Fifty Million Merits from Season 1 remains one of the finest episodes in TV history.

That episode was incredible. Although my favorite one is San Junipero from season 3

Not only because of the great technology conceptualized in the episode, but some moments that along with the music (waves crashing on distant shores of time ) made them unique scenes.

Sometimes I still rewatch some of the scenes with the soundtrack on YouTube, I do the same with some interstellar and leftovers scenes :P

Wow. I also don't like most TV shows, but you got me intrigued. I will check it out and see how I like it. I have found Black Mirror to be one of the best "recent" shows, because of the important messages and reflections on technology and society that it delivers. Number 2 would be Westworld. It is entertainment for sure, but the way they touch on the topics of AI and related ethics is incredible.

Yes, Black Mirror and Westworld are some of the better shows. Westworld meandered a bit, but the final few episodes were stellar. Eagerly look forward to Season 2.

This show sounds great, nice write-up.. Have you heard of the show Dark? It's a German TV show and the english dub is pretty atrocious, but the show itself is amazing. Might be best watched with original German and english subs. Check it out!

It's definitely on my to-watch list. Will watch soon! I never watch dubs anyway, so I'll watch the German version with subtitles.

such a nice article, informative one , thanks for sharing
