Congrats on getting that 500sp but as you said it is only the beginning. The trick now is to keep engaging and pay it forward. You will notice that your growth should speed up if you keep consistantly engaging as you gain more followers and knowledge.
Dolphin should be the next goal and hopefully you can help create a few more minnows too. The more active users that we have the better and I'm sure in years to come an account with 500sp will be looked at as a rare and valuable thing.

You are definitely right about that, the most important thing on STEEM is engaging engaging engaging, the more one engages the more followers, connections and friends one makes which in the end is one of the most important things inside this community.
Dolphin is right around the corner, maybe by the end of this year, who know?! Weirder things have happened
