In this kids book about the first Thanksgiving we see Squanto running through a field of corn chasing away the birds from their crops with his friends. Squanto was about 14 years old when he saw a ship sailing towards the shore of his tribe. Some of the villagers were afraid of the strange new people but the sailors brought many things to trade to show they wanted to be friends. They traded many different things such as mirrors and bracelets in exchange for the villagers warm first. Squanto was very interested about these new people, and spent much time with the sailors. He even learned to speak English. They invited him to go back to the land of the visitors to help them communicate and learn about this world. He joined them and nailed the shoreline meeting with many other native tribes. Squanto was very surprised when he saw the ship sailing towards England. As we continue this Thanksgiving book for kids, we see Squanto arriving in England, the homeland of the visitors. He was very curious and learned many things about their world although he was missing his family back home. After 9 years in England he finally met a man named John Smith who wanted to take Squanto back to his family in the new world. Squanto sailed with Captain John Smith but one day the captain of another ship captured him and many other Indians to take them back to Spain to sell as slaves. Squanto was able to escape from the Spanish slave owners and make his way back to England where he found his way back home to see his family. He was finally able to reach the land of his childhood to find that everyone had died of a terrible sickness. Squanto was very sad and lived alone in the forest for many months but one day met another Indian named Samoset who told him there were a new people living where Squanto's home had been. Squanto met these new people, they were Pilgrims who had come to this land looking For freedom. As we continue to read along together in this book for kids, we see Squanto deciding to help the Pilgrims and showing them how to fish and survive the long cold winters. He also helped them by showing them his hunting grounds and teaching them how to plant crops that could grow in this new land. As fall came, we see the first Thanksgiving being celebrated between the Indians and the Pilgrims as they enjoyed their harvest crops together. This wonderful Thanksgiving book for kids helps us discover the story behind the first Thanksgiving in this new world.
