4 minutes older

in #thoughts5 years ago (edited)

I have a very short break before my next session starts, so let's see if I can get this out in time. :)

A couple of sessions ago there was a surprise fire drill held where they went through the process to make sure the time of assembly was adequate. It took 4 minutes from the start of the alarm (a very, very painful sound) to the final head count performed in the car park outside. Not bad considering what needs to be done before some of the people can walk away from their stations considering that this is a factory location.

It took 6 minutes to get from the classroom to the assembly point and back again, so it didn't upset the rhythm too much and, it actually developed a more dynamic conversation following due to the unexpected interruption.

A lot of what I do for my work is developing flexibility for change as in the industries I am working, change is an ongoing process. What I find though that people are actually become more change resistant than previously and, I think it is affecting the younger generations at a higher rate than the older.

What I suspect is happening is that we have created an on-demand world where we are able to get pretty much anything we want whenever we want it and, it doesn't take much effort. Whether it be food or a movie, we are able to get it delivered very quickly and because we have the freedom to choose and the reliability of delivery, there is little variation and space for random. Even our dating processes have moved from the bar and organic conversation to swiping left or right on a curated feed selected by algorithms we instruct to find us potential partners.

This lack of variation of random introductions into our environment means we less often need to deal with the psychological stress of not getting what we want as we normally get what we are searching for. This means that we are unaccustomed to the disappointment or the patience required and when we are called upon to cope with not getting desires filled or to exercise patience, we fail often.

The older generations have more experience with organic change as well as the process of having to wait for things longer than the millennials. I think that this is part of the reason that the people who do the best on Steem for example are usually those who have the personal experience that has reinforced change management skills and patience for result. These are often people who have faced changes and rather than being victimized and outraged by them, have chosen to deal with them the best they can. I think that for the most part on Steem, the older types are more FUD resistant and less reactionary than the younger. Perhaps this is why that in the long run, they generally do better in terms of investment too.

The odl, hodl.

It's curious to think that the older generation is more likely to adopt flexible mentality, as you say...

I always thought the opposite is more true. That the younger people who have been born with a smartphone in their hands can see change happen in their world so quickly and adopt without too much stress.

But what you say it's also true - people who tend to do well on Steem can handle change well from their past experiences. Necessity is the mother of invention.

That the younger people who have been born with a smartphone in their hands can see change happen in their world so quickly and adopt without too much stress.

Ah, But it is a filtered view of the world, curated, narrow, interest based. THere is so much happening in the world now that no one can handle the view. In time they will realize how narrow they have been.

I think you are correct on this..."in time" is one of the keys you don't understand until you live it and then you will allow that you will probably understand in time on other situation, but at 70 with both parents passing at 80 years old I don't have a lot of "in time" to understand . At this age I guess I will just have to trust the universe that what should be will be and enjoy these last years and not worry.

I feel old compared to the rest of the other users here I must admit. It actually inspires me being around younger people and I like the different thought processes. I am a holder no matter what and maybe that is from experience and don't believe in instant gratification as it take s time.

THere are quite a few elderly around here, "you are not alone."

But yeah, it is good to be around a mix of ages as it creates new dynamics of thought.

man i am old 😀

No. You are odl. :P

Not bad for a fire drill as our office takes 30 minutes or more to assemble at drills! A very disruptive process but necessary for security threats which many have had in the area.

It is a smaller factory with only a few hundred workers at any one time so it is easier to organize. People used to call in bomb threats at my high school (mid 90s) around exam times. They were forced to take each seriously and evacuate us to the oval while sniffer dogs were brought in to sweep - normally took about 3 hours. Fun times. One was called while we were in one of our senior exams and we were not allowed to leave or forfeit our graduation. The police came through with dogs while we were were testing :D

too old to remember where i put the keys/ password that's why me hodl

You know how it feels good when you find a ten in your jeans pocket unexpectedly? Is it going to be like that you think? :DD

can always hope

Certainly... Not long ago the world in general evolved at a much slower speed than today. This is something we can see simply by going through history and noticing the explosion of progress that took place a couple of centuries ago, that progress is getting faster and faster... As a consequence there are tremendous changes from time to time.

We have achieved that changes that would previously be dreamed of in 100 years, that would be achieved in 5. Whether in technology, economy, society... It is tremendous. And for that reason it is understandable that older people have a certain "Vertigo" when it comes to experiencing these changes, "In their times" was something very different ... On the other hand, Millennials and Generation Z, do not have this problem, they probably will not either, these beings are accustomed to it... Maybe too much.

This can be very good or very bad, it depends on how you see it and of course, how the person who has this mentality faces life. They are the desire to do many things at once, want things fast... Among others.

Greetings and Peace!
