Ultimate Time Management 6 - Delegate More

in #time6 years ago

An old expression simply states "If it is not critical that I do something - then it is critical that I not do it." Eliminate as much of your work as possible that can be delegated out. But remember to 1) Give clear instructions. 2) Check up on the work in progress. 3) Give a deadline - 1 that gives you an adequate buffer to resolve any last-minute details/issues - never set the deadline for the time you actually need it. I typically buffer delegated projects by 10 to 20%. So if I need a task done in 10 days, I set the deadline for 8-9 days from now. Be sure to let subordinates know that you have lots of faith in them, have them let you know right away if they need help or if challenges arise, that they will be evaluated on the task, and give them feedback during and after completion.

Many people fail to delegate because they feel "They can do it quicker themselves." If this is true, it is true for one of 3 reasons: 1) Certain staff members need more training/skills to do their job. 2) Certain staff need to be fired - why keep them if they can perform at 100%? Replace them with staff that can actually do the job. 3) You actually want to do it yourself for psychological reasons. Bottom Line: Delegation is a key skill and you will not thrive the way you should until you start to fully utilize it and massive amounts of your time will be forever lost and cannot be retrieved.
