Matematik Felsefesi / The Philosophy of Math

Ma-te-ma-tik! sevenler ve sevmeyenleri ikiye ayıran işlem delisi. Bazılarımıza göre öğrencilik yıllarımızın trajedisi, bazılarına göreyse en sevimli zeka pıtırcığı. Çoğumuzun akıllarındaki deli soru şuydu “Yahu ben bunu öğrensem ilerde ne işime yarayacak ki? Neden gereksiz bilgilerle dolduruyorum aklımı? Zaten dolduramıyorum da lanet olası işlemler!”

Ya size matematiğin dünyanın en büyük sırrını taşıdığını söyleseler o zaman hevesle öğrenmek istemez miydiniz?

Felsefe tarihinin pek çok döneminde filozoflarımız matematiği kesinlik aracı olarak görmüş ve yöntem olarak kullanmışlardı. Böylece en doğru bilgiye ulaşabileceklerine inanıyorlardı. Mesela 2+2=4 işleminin bize dünya hakkında bilgi sunduğunu düşünün. Peki matematiğin kesinliğine nasıl inanılmıştı? Gerçekten de matematiksel çıkarımlar her zaman için doğru sonuç verir miydi?

Örneğin; kendisi de bir tartışma konusu olan 2+2=4 işleminin sonucu kimilerine göre 4 kimilerine göreyse 5 olarak ispatlanmıştır. Bu sonuca nasıl ulaşıyoruz, iki şeyi daha sonra başka iki şeyi sayıp ardından toplamını sayarak mı? Bu yaklaşım Avustralya kırsalında yaşayan Voohoona kabilesinindir:

Matematik felsefesinin büyük bölümü epey teknik gerektirir ve zordur. Tek bilmemiz gerekense, matematik söz konusu olduğunda dünyada iki tür insan olduğudur; sayabilenler ve sayamayanlar.

Math! Operation which separate those who lovers and haters. For some of us, tragedy of our student years and for some of us a gleam of intelligence. It was a crazy question on the minds of many of us; “What will I do with that in the future? Why do I fill my mind with unnecessary information? I cannot even fill it, god damn math!”

What if they were tell you that math is the greatest secret of the world, so don’t you want to learn really now?

In many periods of the history of philosophy our philosophers saw mathematics as a certainty tool and used it as a method. Thus, they believed that they could reach the most accurate information. For example, think of the 2 + 2 = 4 process giving us information about the world. So how could we believe in certainty of mathematics? Indeed, did the mathematical inferences always give the right result?For example; the result of 2+2=4 which is a matter of discussion itself has been proved for some to 4 and for some to 5 as right answer. How do we reach this result, by counting two things then counting the other two and then counting the sum? This approach is the Voohoona tribe living in rural Australia:

One of the inhabitants Voohoona tells that 2 + 2 = 5 to a western anthropologist. The anthropologist curiously asks how he reached this conclusion. “Of course, by counting.” Aboriginal answers.” First, I took two knots in a rope. Then I threw two more knots to another rope. I tied the two ropes, and I have knotted five”

Much of the mathematical philosophy is quite technical and difficult. All we need to know is that there are two kinds of people in the world when mathematics is concerned; those who can count and those who cannot.
