P1 1009 - Ukko-Pekka Steam Locomotive

in #train6 years ago (edited)

I may have mentioned before that I like trains. Now this is the ultimate cool stuff: steam locomotive! This P1 1009 locomotive was made in Finland in 1948. It's maximum speed is 110 km/h, length 22.5 meters, weight 155 tons. You can find more info in Finnish at Ukko-Pekka's homepages and also time tables if you want to catch a ride with it.

This post is all about drowning you in photographs, so here we go!

This would have been a perfect place to take the best shot ever, if only the train would have used that track which is right in front of me. But on this particular day, none of the trains that passed by, used the track nearest me. It was under some kind of maintenance. So this is what I got. All the other shots where the train is nearer, the bridges railings are in the way.

Tampere railway station. Tower Hotel in the background. I like the lines in this photo. The shadow of the roof, the roof itself, the direction of the locomotive and the power lines. I took a little bit of the color intensity away (vibrance). As in the two other shots taken at the railway station. I use Photoshop and mostly edit only the raw images. Except image resizing.

Waiting for the locomotive to return as it has to pull, not push us back.

Here comes Ukko-Pekka.

IMG_2672.jpg

This one and the one above I took some of the vibrance away. Didn't have that much color to begin with, so it wasn't that big change. Still didn't want to go all the way black and white.

Some yellow railroad flowers. (I don't know the name.)

Back at Tampere station.

Steeeeeeeeeeam on!

I was squating pretty close to the train (because I wanted to and because I'm an adult and I know what I'm doing... :D ) and I could feel the power of the engine as the train passed by. :) And as I'm writing of it now, I can still smell the smoke.

IMG_2789.jpg

I enhanced the yellow and orange colors (saturation) so that the post car would stand out more. I didn't have to enhance the smoke because there already was lots and lots of it.

This last photo didn't have very much color so I took the little that it had away. Bye bye Ukko-Pekka!

Thank you for this post. The photos were superb!

Kiitos! :)
Emmänyt superbista tiiä mutta näin suomalaittain sanottuna, ei ehkä ihan paskimmasta päästä. :D

Ok, suomeksi sanottuna ne olivat aika hyviä. Englanniksi tietysti jotain ylisanoja vilisevää lätinää. :)

No, kyllä minua hiukan hämäsi, että fokus oli turhaan niissä keltaisissa kukissa siinä yhdessä junaannousukuvassa.

hey insane. Some fabulous photos and can't believe the condition of the country car. It is good to see they are looking after it and maintaining the history.

Thank you! :)
All the cars were in pretty good condition. Here's the info about the cars translated from Ukko-Pekka's home pages. https://hoyryjuna.weebly.com/tietoa-junastamme.html

In 1990, three old Helsinki local train wagons departed from Finland to England. The complete modifications of the wagons were made there and were completed in September 1996. The wagons returned to Finland in November 1996. They have been redesigned and renovated. The end result is three stylish, new types of wagons, two of which are restaurant / bar wagons and one parlor car.
72-seat country bar car
62-seat mahogany decorated bar car
48-seat Ukko-Pekka parlor wagon
Restaurant / bar wagons have a serving bar and storage space. The catering is prepared with a generator / kitchen car supplied with a 45 kW generator for electricity and heat generation and six refrigerators for the customer's use.

Can't really decide which one to use, car or a wagon. Google translator was also confused about that. So I used both. And the parlor car could also be translated saloon wagon. But I think you get the general idea.

I think it's awesome that people respect history and want to preserve it.

We took a short trip from Tampere to Toijala and back, about 40 km. I photographed furiously, we had just enough time to sit for a short while in all of the carts and drink coffee.

Great post👍🏻the interior in the wagons is beautiful, quite different than today.

True! Beautiful but I was thinking that long train rides must have been agony in those seats.

Great photos!! I did not know that they still use Ukko-Pekka occasionally.

Thanks! :)
Yes and there's few more museum trains roaming the tracks now and then: steam and diesel trains of Haapamäen museoveturiyhdistys.
