Welcome back, readers! Today, I want to share with you the species of butterflies which fly freely in this park. Let's find out!

Common Grass Yellow

Eurema hecabe

This butterfly is often considered the most abundant butterfly in Singapore. This species can be found throughout the island and when in flight, it is almost indistinguishable from the five other Eurema species in Singapore. There are typically two cell spots on the forewing - a characteristic that is often used to identify the Common Grass Yellow from the other species in the genus.

Dark Glassy Tiger

Parantica agleoides

This species is fairly common in Singapore and its host plant is the Blood Flower (Asclepias curassavica). The male Dark Glassy Tiger has special scent scales along its hindwing, which are presumably used during courtship.

Dingy Bush Brown

Mycalesis perseus

The Dingy Bush Brown has the same flight pattern as other members of this genus. It usually hops and stops with its wings folded upright. The butterfly has been found to bask in the bright sunlight with its wings open in the mornings.

Great Eggfly

Hypolimnas bolina

The Great Eggfly is seasonally common in Singapore. The males are territorial and often return to their favourite perch even after it has been disturbed. There is also a second subspecies of eggfly that occurs in Singapore, the Jacintha Eggfly (Hypolimnas bolina jacintha).

Dark Grass Brown

Orsotriaena medus

The Dark Grass Brown is a common butterfly in Singapore. It is low-flying and prefers shaded habitats such as grassy areas beneath tree canopies and undergrowth.

Painted Jezebel

Delias hyparete

The Painted Jezebel is usually spotted flying in the treetops, where its host plant, the Malayan Mistletoe (Dendrophthoe pentandra) can be found. It descends to feed on flowering shrubs or to rest in the shaded understorey towards the later part of the day. This butterfly occurs commonly throughout Singapore and is found in both urban areas and forested nature reserves.

Peacock Pansy

Junonia almana

This butterfly is relatively common and can be found across parks and gardens in Singapore. It tends to be more active in open grassy areas under bright sunlight. Like the other members of this genus, it adopts a flap-guide flight pattern and rests on its favourite perches with its wings usually opened flat.

Plain Tiger

Acerbas chrysippus

The Plain Tiger is mostly found in the vicinity of its host plants, the Blood Flower (Asclepias curassavica) and Crown Flower (Calotropis gigantea). These plants are not commonly cultivated in Singapore, so populations of this butterfly tend to be localized, in areas where these host plants occur naturally. This species displays rather striking colouration and is distasteful to birds.

Short Banded Sailor

Phaedyma columella

This butterfly is the only representative of its genus in Singapore and Malaysia. It is a common species which can be found in forested areas, urban parks and gardens. It has a graceful gliding flight pattern and usually perches under the sun with its wings open.

I will leave you readers with the last picture of the coast of Coney Island Park. Signing off! Sejuk!
