Travels With Connie #60 Maryhill Fashion Models
Sometimes I know exactly where I am going. In that case it’s easy, pick a route and go.
More often I have an idea where I’d like to end up, and generally speaking a direction to go.
Once in a while I just follow the front wheel and see where it takes me.
The year was 1945. The world in general and France in particular was caught in the social lurch that was the end of WWII.
France had been liberated and the Nazis beaten but the economy was in tatters. No one in France had any materials or money to buy them.
France's fashion industry had been hammered almost to death by WWII. The fashion houses and designers that did survive had nothing to work with after 5 long years of Nazi occupation. A great idea was born.
Why not do the fall 1945 fashion shows in miniature? That would take so much less material and money yet still allow a fall season. All the major fashion houses in France participated.
Dolls were found and standardized. Several of the fashion houses cooperated in unprecedented ways to make this happen. Set designers were hired and the fashion show toured the world instead of the world going to Paris.
It worked out very well for all concerned. The fashion houses sold some new designs around the world based on their minitures and the industry was saved.
The Maryhill Museum exhibits 3 full sets of these miniatures. I have not one bit of fashion sense nor one whit of interest in it, but I was absolutely captivated by this exhibit. I sat on a bench in the midst of the three sets for quite some time.

Truly a logical solution for a major problem at the time, I had no idea that this had ever taken place but I am no fashion person by any sense of the imagination. I do know my little Shortie has gotten pretty good with her sewing machine she got for Christmas and has been making some pretty snazzy dresses and outfits for her Barbie dolls, I will have to show her your post when she wakes up in the morning.
It just blew me away. I'll just bet your Shortie will be impressed, too. Just an elegant solution to a big problem.
Yes, I showed it to her and she was very impressed. Since I got her I-Pod fixed she has been getting ready to do her doll "fashion photo shoot" with the doll clothes she has been making, she even bought a little miniature battery operated fan so she can have the doll's hair blow like the real models do for photo shoots. Talk about attention to details.

It's so unexpected! I mean it is literally in the middle of nowhere. Pretty cool place indeed. And cameras are just fine, long as you don't use a flash. How cool is that?

I agree, this is something that I have no knowledge of and wouldn't go looking for it but the exhibit looks super cool. I would love to be able to read all those little descriptor cards in front of the case. We love museums but take forever going through them as we take everything in and read so much.
I actually thought about going back for a full day. Next time I am out and visiting my brother. I didn't mention it, but there are 3 major wineries in the immediate area. Those aren't as much fun for me as they used to be....
Quite interesting first time I have heard about this. Using dolls to do a fashion show. It was an awesome idea to keep the fashion business going. If it was done for only one season those dolls would be very valuable.
I have no idea if it was repeated, or if it goes on today. All I know is that was the solution in 1945. Just one of the coolest things I've seen.

That miniature fashion show is a demonstration of true determination on the part of the French. Women are going to have something nice to wear this fall, damn the torpedoes!
