Melodies of Assam

in #travel6 years ago

Hey Steemit

While you fill out your travel diaries there is a corner in India that will always beckon, the North-East, to be more specific Assam. There is something uncanny and laid back about that place, that there is a mystery waiting to be unfolded and each time you are there a new story is revealed. Loaded with World Heritage sites, here is why the pages dedicated in your travel diary to Assam is not enough.

Immerse yourself in the nature

Apart from breezing through the tea gardens, the Kaziranga National Park is a must visit. It is a comfortable commute from Guwahati and all the resorts arrange for Elephant and Jeep safari and you are sure to spot the exotic One horned Rhino. Assam is not just about Rhinos, you can also visit the Manas National Park which is dedicated to tigers and elephants. Adventure will get the better of you when you go for river rafting and angling at Nameri National Park. The excitement does not stop here as you must pay a visit to Dibru-Saikhowa National Park because how often do you see river dolphins?

Travel back in time

Assam has a lesser presence in our history books so in short it is the only place the Mughals failed to conquer. The Ahoms ruled for about six centuries and most of the monuments of their time such as Rang ghar and Kareng ghar can be found in Sibsagar. Amavasya is a good time to visit the ancient Kamakhya temple, the atmosphere is of a mini kumbh mela. However nothing beats Majuli, the largest inhabited river island in the world. The only way to get there is on tiny ferry boat that accommodates your car and bike. The island is an abode of migratory birds and Satras which are functioning monasteries initiated during the neo-vaishnavites culture in the 15th century.

Spoil yourself with the local weaves of cotton and silk

Sualkuchi is a silk village just by the river Brahmaputra. Over there every household weaves silk and of many kinds and designs, whether it be Pat, Kesa Pat, Muga or Eri. Each of these type of silk is of an unique kind and texture. In this silk village not only can you shop they are also happy to show you how the weaving is done. If you are more curious you can always visit the silk factory from where the different types of silkworms are nurtured for the thread. Cotton weaves of the Missing, Krabi, Boro and Assamese community are also very beautiful.

Indulge in the folk culture and food

Assam is an abundance of culture. You can check out the bihu, boro, karbi dance etc each belonging to a separate community. You can get a glance of the theatre and the classical dance of Sattriya at the Satra’s of Majuli.
Food of course accompanies these rich cultures. One of the must haves would be the Bhutjolokia or Ghost pepper, the hottest chilli in the world. For the ones with a subdued taste bud can try the delicious fish tenga, coconut petha, pork fry and cream with bora rice (sticky rice) which will get you sleepy as it is the same ingredient used to make rice beer.

To conclude, don't miss out on the opportunity.
