World traveler tips

in #travel6 years ago

Hey guys, I think traveling's increasing popularity has a lot of people asking a lot of questions, such as: how do you afford it? How do you budget it while you're on the road?

Here are some basic tips of traveling I think everyone should know, regardless where they're going.

  1. Stay in hostels! These are both great and economic/cheap relative to alternatives (airbnb/hotels) I can't stress how much hostels change you, not only do you get to meet amazing people from all around the world, whom are traveling for different periods of time, they also have tons of tips to give you! They'll help you save money by cooking dinners with you or telling you about cheap shops/restaurants around the area that don't sacrifice quality for price!

  2. Cook! If you're on the road for a while you must know that the locals eat for much cheaper than you are if you're constantly in a restaurant for every meal, so buy some food from a shop! Even in a western country like Germany or the USA you can easily manage to make a meal for under 3$ per person. Shop around and look at your options!

  3. Contemplate alternative transportation! Most people pay an extra few dollars for a faster bus or train, but usually part of experiencing the culture you're visiting is to see how they would go from on town/city to another. Getting on an overcrowded bus with people and their animals/groceries may not be worth your instagram post, but it's worth your learning experience. Trust me, you'll like it more than you expect :)

  4. Speak to locals! No matter where you are locals are curious as to why you're there. They have the true gems of knowledge that others working in the tourism industry may not. They know what they have at every meal of the day and where they'd get it. This is great for trying less famous but often more traditional foods. If you have a coffee with an elder local, you'll get a better feel of the place you're visiting and you couldn't possibly regret it.

  5. Stay aware! No matter where you are in the world, don't leave your things unattended. Some of the most "developed" countries and cities have a higher number of pickpockets/thieves than in the less "developed" counterparts. I don't think you need to be scared for any reason, but don't be careless and definitely keep your money close to you when you're taking it out, showing too much is not just rude but an unnecessary risk.

Clearly after 3 years on the road I have tons more to share than just this information. I think you guys should travel wisely in order to get a cool and different outlook on the world around you.IMG_20171117_113713.jpg
