I have seen them do something similar with swords and stuff and it is amazing as there is no scarring. Just think the whole thing is crazy yet people are drawn to watch it.
it does seem a bit nuts to me also. While this religion is wide-spread, the south of Thailand is one of the few places in the world where the self-mutilation is practiced and this is not an official part of the ceremony. It makes me wonder how it got started... some dude was like "how about we stab ourselves in the face!" and it gained popular traction somehow.
