Daily Nature Fix: Exploring Ireland. (Original Photos)
Good evening, folks. Tonight's Daily Nature Fix will be a few more photos from our trip to Ireland and Northern Ireland. It's hard to believe it was almost two years ago. I've picked a few random ones and a few more from our favorite places that I haven't shared before. Hope you enjoy!
^^^This first one is of the Dunguaire Castle, near Galway. We were just driving along as the sun began to set and this beauty smacked us right in the face. I pulled into the nearest safe spot and took this photo from the road across the way. It was built in the 1500's and the tower is around 80 feet tall. The whole thing had a defensive wall around it as well.
^^^These little ruins were set back a little ways from the Wild Atlantic Way highway. It was a bit south of Galway in an area called Gleninagh (I think). Unfortunately, there was no signage or information about what it once was, but I'd imagine it's as old as some nearby church and castle nearby, so between the 1300's and 1500's.
^^^Speaking of that church, here is an arched doorway from inside it. It's unknown exactly how old the church is, but some medieval documentation has shown it to be AT LEAST seven hundred years old as the document that mentions it is dated 1302.
^^^Lastly, we have a more natural spectacle: the Dun Briste sea stack at Downpatrick Head in Northern Ireland. I have shared a few other photos of this geological wonder, but I can't get enough of it. At 150 feet tall, it generously displays millions of years of sedimentary rock formation and volcanic history. Up into the late 1300's, there used to be a land bridge connecting the stack to the main land, with a few settlers making a home atop the pillar. In a particular harsh storm, the land bridge collapsed though; stranding the people. They were later rescued with the help of some ships.

Beautiful - the texture of the Dun Briste stack against the water is amazing. I wonder how many thousands of years all those lines in the stone represent!
