Colombia's Lesser Known Spots Offer Even More for Travelers

On a recent trip to Colombia, I had the chance to visit the Boyacá region just northeast of Bogota, the country's capital.

We were based in the town of Sogamoso during our stay and managed a few day trips to Laguna de Tota (the largest lake in Colombia) and Salto de Candelas (the country's second-highest waterfall).

The following are just a few of the highlights.

Finca San Pedro

Finca San Pedro couldn't have been a better place to stay in during our visit. An old family home that's been converted into a bed-and-breakfast, Finca San Pedro was the perfect combination of outdoor scenery and solitude.

Laguna de Tota

Guided boat tours let you explore the lake.

A small hotel/restaurant (Arco Iris del Lago) just around the corner from Playa Blanca offers specialty trout dishes. Ask a local and you'll be directed towards the trail that leads you there. Don't worry if you lose your way (like we did), just keep going...you'll get there eventually.

Salto de Candelas

Located about 70 kilometers (43.5 miles) from Sogamoso, Salto de Candelas is a stunning waterfall that you shouldn't miss if you're in the area.

The 1.5-hour hike takes you into a tropical jungle as you make your way up towards the waterfall. This is no easy hike, so be prepared to exercise.

The 1.5-hour trek to the waterfall was made easier by a local dog (see bottom-left of photo) who decided to lead us the entire way and back.
