The Colombian City of Eternal Spring

My First Visit to Medellín, Colombia

I finally had the opportunity to visit Medellín—after hearing so many great things about it on my numerous visits to Bogotá.

The city felt like an less-crowded and easier-to-navigate city when compared to Bogotá, the nation's capital. Along with the typical delicious food one can expect when traveling to Colombia, Medellín gave us cultural and outdoor activities to enjoy.

Parque Lleras

Parque Lleras is a great area where you can find restaurants, bars, cafes, and retail shops all in one area. There's a lot of tourists in the areas, but it doesn't feel like the typical tourist trap. We found ourselves in Parque Lleras on more than one occasion, as it simply offered so much in a walkable area.

Museo de Antioquia & Plaza Botero

The artwork of famed Colombian artist Fernando Botero housed in the Museo de Antioquia. Outside, Plaza Botero features many of the artists sculptures and the Rafael Uribe Palace of Culture just next door.

Hormigas Culonas (big-bottomed ants) are sold as a snack. They're typically fried or roasted, and I've been wanting to try them for some time. They weren't as tasty as I'd hoped.

Seen Around Medellín

Bandeja Paisa, a local dish that's always been a personal favorite of mine.

Mahalo Action Sports Cafe is a hilltop restaurant and bar with a skate ramp, games, and other attractions. Great spot to have a drink and some food while overlooking the city.

Ganso & Castor is a great spot for brunch.

Medellín has a great metro system that makes it easy to get around. But the real standout was their metrocable system, which makes it even easier for locals and visitors to make their way to Parque Arví and the surrounding areas.

Parque Arví

Parque Arví is a nature reserve just outside of the city that consists of a wide range of attractions including butterfly and insect exhibits, a hotel and restaurant, and canoe rides.

I highly recommend making a stop in Medellín if you plan on visiting Colombia. It's an easy introduction for first-time visitors and there's plenty to enjoy.
