Trolls of the Atlantic: Beaches Of Vik

in #travel6 years ago

Trolls rose from the atlantic ocean, frozen, undaunted by the crashing waves slowly wearing them away. A mountain of basalt staircases watched over them so they stay in there place, though it itself battered by poseidon's wrath. Hazel eyes weaved their gaze through needles of sleet pelting hurricane gusts of black sand and rebellious strands of charcoal hair,to the hills and lochs shrouded by the horizon
Clara was helpless to move on her own, pushed around to the whims of the wind which had no specific direction that it wanted to go, as though she was being tossed around to the amusement of some deity. The only direction she was hesitant to go was towards the sea. Iceland may have very friendly people, but the landscape certainly harbored a resentment expressed vindictively.
“Ah-ah-achoo!” her entire body shivered at the thought of going home, the north atlantic pulling her closer to the shores of scotland, body slamming into the girl next to her.
“Woah how strong is this wind?!” she says smiling “I think the wolf got a bit stronger, maybe i'll be blown back to vancouver!” Her over excited brown eyes vibrant and wide, more curious than a dead cat, though filled with a childlike glee.
“I know right, this !” Clara said, “ Probably about a thousand kilometers per hour!” Holding on to each other they trudged out further along the beach, struggling to not to be swept away into the sky.
“Woah that's so cool! Look at those columns in the sea, some say those are petrified trolls! ” Lia reached into her hoodie pocket, pulling out her phone, and pointing it towards the sea. Rough guitar riffs and what sounded like icelandic words cut their decibels into the wind, a bit unusual but oddly pleasant. She seemed to be having so much fun, paying every little detail with as much amazement as the last. “My friends back in BC are going to be so jealous!”
“What’s with the music? Clara asked, thinking back to her own time in vancouver, which was at this time almost a year ago.
“Ah i just love bjork she’s awesome! And its kinda my thing to play music over the videos I take, isnt it just so cool!?” Lia responded, an ever expanding smile, and childlike dark brown eyes that seemed attracted to anything new in the vicinity.
“Oh yeah I was at her concert back in Tibet two years ago, those yellow bellied gits scrambled to realize just what she was trying to do!” Images of bewildered chinese and bjork on stage singing came back to clara, fresh as if she was there “ Independence! Don't let them do that to you! Ha!” she exclaimed a sly smile on her face, feelings of rebellion boiling through her veins.
“Woah that's just way radical, I saw that on the news! Where are you even from that you went to china? You look spanish but sound more like your from scotland, its like woah she's an anomaly!” Lia said, the wind pushing her dangerously close the sea, waves like hands reaching out to grab her and spirit her down to the depths of the ocean. Indecisive, the wind decided to change direction, pushing them away from death, though pelting the two in the face with hail.
“Well i think my family was from the basque country from what i've been told, but all I have ever known is fort william which is near inverness.” Clara said, her words muffled by the wind. “Honestly I got fed up with those bloody teachers and stupid rules its just all corrupt, so i ran out of school and never turned back since”
“You didn't want to be just another brick in the wall, I totally get it. I had asian parents so you can imagine how it went for me” Lias tone was sarcastically regretful, as if she was making fun of her past self. “ Itd have been great to meet you before all of this student debt!” Kicking up some sand that rushed into her face upon the wind deciding to be vindictive, She wondered how the past few years would have gone differently had she given it all up and headed out with no destination in mind.
Waves crept closer and closer, the sky turning darker and darker, Hail falling harder and harder, it was just the two of them on the beach feeling as though they were at the edge of the world.
Clara paused for a moment before she responded, “I wanted to be the bulldozer that said ‘fuck off’ to their wall! I felt like an east german before ninety-one!” She exclaimed with an over exaggerated hand gesture
“Yet I think the hardest part was probably crossing the channel, bloody ironic isn't it? They even get inside your mind and make you think things like ‘Why am I even doing this, its clearly not the right thing’, PHONIES! at least what id call them”
“I agree!, but what was the breaking point? like the final snap that made the proverbial tree fall in the hurricane?” Lia asked an expression suggesting she was looking for a way to escape her own problems. “There must have been a lot of little things, but what was the final straw?”
“I remembered my childhood dream, something that had been knocked out of me when I tried to escape earlier and failed” Her entire body began to ache and clara clutched her arm that had broken upon falling “Actually at the time I was lucky to still be alive, but that is a story for another time
