Glass House Mountains - Queensland: I tried it and failed

in #travel6 years ago

These are actually a series of mountains although locally it is understood which one you are referring to (so I've been told.) For the sake of clarity, i will specificy what it is that I mean by Glass House Mountains.

The main rock that pretty much everyone deals with (particularly for climbing) is Mt. Tibrogargan. This is also the largest one and is the one that depending on which angle you view it, happens to look like an Ape, particularly at certain times of day. Myself and my pal - both of which are reasonably fit set out to conquer the peaks and well, we did ok I guess.

There are lots of signs warning you that this is a dangerous climb right from the start but we didn't take it seriously because Australia is a country so unimaginably fixated on safety that it becomes difficult to take the warnings seriously.

I can say with absolute certainty, that these warnings are legit. Myself and my pal, both of which are intrepid adventurers of sorts, did not make it up the summit when faced with situations like this.

There are no ropes, no ladders, no clearly marked paths, and i think one of the most disturbing things is that there was a memorial at the bottom for the guy who died on this thing just A WEEK AGO.

It might be a rite of passage or something and maybe i bitched out a bit but yo dude, i didn't come here to die for a selfie on top of a rock. When we got to the top of one of the "easier" parts (which was more like "terrifying" than "easy") there was a bunch of people sitting around that were trying to muster up the courage to do the next part of the climb.

None of the people that were sitting there when we arrived decided to do the final part. This included myself and my friend - and both of us are rather seasoned climbers. It was scary. There were no discernible hand-holds, there was no marked path, there weren't even signs anymore because apparently we had already gone beyond the point where the government was interested in helping us with information anymore.

It was pointed out by one of the guys that over 100 rescues have had to be done on this rock in 2018 and more than a dozen deaths. Because I am a lot more interested in being alive at the moment... we decided to turn back.

Sorry Glass Rock Mountains, but you defeated me. you are lovely, but I simply am not willing to risk my life on a jump to a handhold in order to reach a peak because you know what? Even if you do make it to the top, you gotta find all of those places to put your feet on the way down as well.

I am Australian but I couldn't help but agree and laugh at this:

Australia is a country so unimaginably fixated on safety that it becomes difficult to take the warnings seriously.

Great post by the way!

So nobody has climbed it yet? Not even professional mountaineers? Maybe they would be allowed by taking necessary permissions, but it really does look hectic.

Greetings from Cape Town :)

oh no, many people have climbed it. Several came back down while i was there. I'm just saying it was too scary for me with no safety equipment.

@gooddream, In first picture it's reflecting as this place is really exciting and covered with the natural essence all around.

And in my opinion many prefer to hike at Natural Places and hiking with the friends are more amazing aspect.

In pictures we can see that it's not easy and the path is reflecting as tough, but good to know that both of you are enthusiastic towards this exploration.

And hope that you both had amazing time, specially whenever we visit any natural place then we can hear the conversations of nature.

Wishing you an great day and stay blessed. 🙂

mountaineering is a game of danger as well as courage. This games is play for people's hobbies and values for prestige. Abandonment is also a hobby, and this hobby sometimes gets fatal. The problem of breathing is on the hills but due to the lack of air pressure on high altitude mountains.
You start to boil only after ten steps, in the initial period, you feel that you are tired but you do not have such a breath. You are suffocated because the amount of oxygen in the air decreases with height increases. This is the same as oxygen The deficiency leads to suffocation, the head feels heavy, and the further climb becomes difficult for you. But slowly having fun in it.

Haha @gooddream. so funny at the ending, I was so concerned when reading this but thank God you made the wise decision by turning back. I can't afford to miss you and your lovely articles.
I've not been to any mountain climb before but I wish to check out one when I'm less busy and hope I'll make a size decision like you when I get to a tougher view.

No shame in saving your skin; live to climb another day. It's funny how when a government/parent/institution pushes so hard for some cause like safety that they go overboard it tends to dilute the message and have the opposite effect. Sad really, I think the UK and the US are probably not too far behind you guys.

Looks like an incredible place man! And by incredible I mean incredibly scary!! @gooddream you guys made the right decision!
