Strolling through the city..

It often happens that a traveller goes to places that are said to be the best tourist destinations, and comes back disappointed. I have visited a lot of metropolises of the world but one in particular has left a deep impression on me and that is Belgrade.

We were first introduced when I went to college there, five years ago. Without much thought, I chose Belgrade as a place where I will build my future because even then I felt we will get along well. I still think I made the right choice.

One of it's appeals are the opposites that match well, like yin and yang.

On one hand the city seems to be gray and dull

while on the other it oozes with colors and joy.

It's enough to spend merely a few days in it for the city to win you over with it's charms and liveliness.

It will knock you off your feet with it's architecture, greenspace, rivers but most of all- it's spirit.

A lot of literature giants have written about it. The city had a great number of 'owners' and that only makes the city's history more thrilling.

The most important historical monument in Belgrade is Kalemegdan.

The word kale means fortress and the word meydan means battlefield. It is also sometimes referred to as ficir bajir which is can be translated from the Turkish language as Contemplation hill.

One of the interesting things about Belgrade are the underground tunnels and hideouts and the famous story about how the fortress is connected with Tower Gardos (Zemun).

The city also holds a lot of monuments and my personal favorite happens to be precisely in Kalemegdan. Monument Pobednik (1928) is the work of the great Ivan Mestrovic.

The monument is visited daily my aproximately 5000 people. It is also the most photographed monument in the city.

The architecture of the Old Town is fascinating as well.

It's like every rock placed there has it's own story to tell.

I have also taken a few photos and I hope to bring to you at least the smallest portion of how much I enjoyed my time here.

I can't go on without at least mentioning the monument of the Prince Mihailo (1882) which is located at the Republic Square and it's the city's symbol.

National Museum of Serbia is just behind it meanwhile the National Theatre is facing it.

Students Square is near the Republic square. It gives the city a special aura and symbolizes the student life of Belgrade.
