Attractions of Dalat: #16 Langbiang Mountains

Lang Biang Mountains is to be found about 12 kilometres from the centre of Dalat, i on plateau known as Lang Biang. This is in Lac Duong District, Lam Dong Province. The Mountain is also known as Lam Vien Mountain. The mountain rises imposingly above the surrounding countryside.

As with many of these things in Vietnam there is a legend attached. A boy called K’Lang met and fell involve with a girl called Ho Biang. The boy rescued the girl from a pack of wolves. However the families, who had been feuding for years, forbid the love to flourish. From this point on there are two versions of the story. In one version they married despite this and moved to the mountain to live. However Ho Biang became critically ill and K’Lang return to his village to ask for help. Someone fired a poisoned arrow at K’lang but Ho Biang jumped in front of her husband and took the arrow. The alternative version is that the couple committed suicide together after the families refused them permission to marry.

Both versions of the story end with Ho Biang’s father so full of remorse that he unified the feuding families and gave permission for young lovers from each tribe to marry. He unified both tribes into one called K’Ho. Meanwhile the dead lovers graves grew into the two giant hills that have become known as Langbiang Mountains.

There is plenty to see and do here including camping, mountain climbing, trekking and even paragliding. Tourists enjoy meeting the local ethnic tribe people that remain here to this day. One bizarre feature here are the horses that locals paint to look like zebras. There seems to be no real explanation for this, but the locals will tell you they are zebras and seem somewhat convinced.
