Dear Steemians,

today and in the next post I would like to show you some pictures from a trip to the island of Gozo. The main attraction of Gozo at the time of my visit was the "Azure Window", which unfortunately collapsed in March 2017.

🇩🇪🇦🇹 Liebe Steemians, heute und im nächsten Beitrag möchte ich euch ein paar Bilder von einem Ausflug auf die Insel Gozo zeigen. Die Hauptsehenswürdigkeit Gozo's war zum Zeitpunkt meines Besuchs das "Azure Window", was leider im März 2017 eingestürzt ist.

The island of Gozo is located northwest of Malta and can best be reached by ferry from Malta. The island is about 67 square kilometers large and has about 30000 inhabitants.

🇩🇪🇦🇹 Die Insel Gozo befindet sich nordwestlich von Malta und ist am besten per Fähre von Malta aus zu erreichen. Die Insel ist ca. 67 Quadratkilometer groß und hat ca. 30000 Einwohner.

We rented a car in Valletta and drove it to the ferry port in Cirkewwa. From there it takes a few minutes by ferry to Gozo, passing the small island of Comino.

🇩🇪🇦🇹 Wir haben in Valletta einen Mietwagen geliehen und sind damit bis zum Fährhafen in Cirkewwa gefahren. Von dort geht es in ein paar Minuten mit der Fähre rüber nach Gozo, wobei man an der kleinen Insel Comino vorbeifährt.

From the ferry you have a beautiful view of the St. Mary’s Tower on the island of Comino. The watchtower was built in 1618 and secured the ferry connection from Malta to Gozo against pirates.

🇩🇪🇦🇹 Von der Fähre aus hat man einen schönen Blick auf den https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Mary’s_Tower) auf der Insel Comino. Der Wachturm wurde 1618 erbaut und sicherte die Fährverbindung von Malta nach Gozo gegen Piraten ab.

After half an hour's drive we reach the port of "Ghajnsielem", a community with about 3000 inhabitants.

🇩🇪🇦🇹 Nach einer halben Stunde Fahrt erreichen wir den Hafen von "Ghajnsielem", eine Gemeinde mit ca. 3000 Einwohnern.

Malta is a very Catholic country and therefore has many well-preserved church buildings. We visited one of the churches and I also tried to photograph the interior, which is not easy with my compact camera.

🇩🇪🇦🇹 Malta ist ein sehr katholisches Land, und hat demzufolge auch viele guterhaltene Kirchenbauten. Wir haben eine der Kirchen besucht, und ich habe auch einmal versucht, den Innenraum zu fotografieren, was mit meiner Kompaktkamera aber nicht so einfach ist.

The island seems to be very sparse in parts, as there are only a few trees and green areas require artificial irrigation and use them primarily for agricultural purposes.

🇩🇪🇦🇹 Die Insel wirkt streckenweise sehr karg, da es kaum Bäume gibt und Grünflächen eine künstliche Bewässerung erfordern und diese primär für landwirtschaftliche Nutzung verwendet werden.

Later we went on to the centre of the island to the city of Victoria. There we visited the imposing Cittadella. Already during the Roman Empire an acropolis stood here, which was converted into a castle in the Middle Ages.

🇩🇪🇦🇹 Später fuhren wir weiter in die Mitte der Insel zur Stadt Viktoria. Dort besuchten wir die imposante Cittadella. Bereits zu Zeiten des römischen Reichs stand hier eine Akropolis, welche im Mittelalter in eine Burg umgebaut wurde.

The midday sun burning from the sky caused us a lot of trouble when we visited the fortress, and I was glad when we finally continued towards the coast to the "Azure Window". But more about this in the next post: -)

🇩🇪🇦🇹 Die vom Himmel brennende Mittagssonne machte uns bei der Besichtigung der Festung sehr zu schaffen, und ich war froh, als wir endlich Richtung Küste zum "Azure Window" weiterfuhren. Doch dazu mehr im nächsten Post :-)
