124 kilometers from St. Petersburg to the north, almost on the border with the Republic of Karelia, is a small town of Priozersk. The first mention of the settlement dates back to 1295. It was a fortress which in Russian was called Korela, and in Swedish - Kexholm. From 1611 to 1918, this city was called Swedish Kexholm. In 1918, when Finland gained independence from Russia, the city became known as Kakisalmi. After the Russo-Finnish war in 1940, the district's lands were returned to the Soviet Union (Russia) and, accordingly, the town of Kakisalmi was returned. This name was worn by the city until 1948, then it received the official name Priozersk.

Until 1580, the territories were under Russian rule, they were part of the Novgorod Republic. But in 1580 the lands were taken by Swedish troops and were under the rule of Sweden until 1595. After the Russo-Swedish war in 1595, the whole of the Korel district was returned to the Russian state. But during the Polish intervention in 1611 The Russian Tsar Vasily Shuisky had to give Korela to the Swedes in exchange for military assistance in the fight against the Poles. then the Russian-Swedish army successfully repulsed the siege by the Poles of the Trinity-Sergius Monastery.
The city and territories were under Swedish rule until 1721. After Russia's victory over Sweden in the Northern War, Sweden was forced to recognize the annexation of the Kexholm region to Russia.
In 1811 the Russian Emperor Alexander the First issued a decree on the entrance of the Kexgolmsky district into the Grand Duchy of Finland in the Russian Empire.
