The best hotel upgrade You've ever received?

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

At a Ritz-Carlton. I had always wanted to stay in one, so I saved up to experience one of the lower-pricepoint rooms on a weekend getaway. When we arrived, our room wasn't ready. As an apology (and I want to emphasize that I did not complain or make a fuss; they did this on their own), they upgraded us to what they called a "nicer suite". I thought this was wonderful luck, but then I was escorted by a bellhop to a private elevator with key-card access and taken to a private floor, the sort of floor reserved for VIPs who register with fake names.

It was an amazing suite. Imagine all of the stereotypical luxuries, and they were there. Hors d'oeuvre and cocktails. Bathrooms done in pure white marble (quite slippery, actually). A silver-framed "bath menu" where you could pick an experience and call a number to have someone come draw it for you and scatter rose petals, salts, pipe in music. Imagine the door to the suite opening in the morning and, as an employee wheels in your French toast on a silver cart, you catch a glimpse of a famous guitarist shuffling down the hallway past her on his way to the elevator, case in hand.

In short, this is roughly how I felt:

This is a still from the 1982 film "Annie"

It only lasted for a day, and I have no idea what I did to deserve such a magnificent upgrade, but what an experience! I later found out that there was another celebrity on the floor who had fallen asleep in the bathtub and flooded out the suite beneath him, and their discretion was such that I never knew a thing about it.

Runner-up experience: I stayed at The Drake, in Chicago, on my birthday one year. I mentioned in passing that I was in town for my birthday and when I arrived in my room, there was a birthday cake waiting.
