History Of Aceh Tribe's Civilization

This museum has opened a few months since it was first inaugurated by Langsa Mayor Usman Abdullah in the end of 2018. This museum is a historical museum first to stand in Langsa City, where I am living now. Langsa City is one of 23 municipalities in Aceh Province, Indonesia. So only a few municipalities in Aceh that has their own history museum, like this one. It's located in Ahmad Yani Street in the downtown area that is very easy to reach. Precisely at the corner of 'Simpang Pos' croassroad in front of the famous coffee shop 'Pus Kupi'. From my house only takes about 10 minutes by riding my scooter.

To get into it, the ticket is cheap, which is 3000 Indonesian Rupiah valid for 1 day. The hours are from 9am to 12pm and open again at 14-5 afternoon. In the morning this place is crowded with student. Every day there will be students from different schools who came here. They do the study tour and hearing the explanation directly from the collector of ancient objects here, namely Teungku Nur Iman. He tells the details of the history of each object from which they came, where he found it, what the function of the object is and what it is made of.

It really brings some interest in reading history that is rising up for the visitors. The collector is present in every day at this museum to explain everything. As the students listened reverently, asking and recording important points, which will be discussed later in their class when back to school. This is one of the good efforts of our Mayor of Langsa City to know the history of their own tribe and nation.

In his speaking, Mayor Usman Abdullah expressed his gratitude to Tengku Nur Iman who had and will always willing to lend lots of personal and his family collections that can be exhibited and displayed at this Museum. Because it's not easy to hunt and collect many historical objects from all corners of Aceh. Because many of the historical objects come out of this country and lost somewhere.

What you Can See At Langsa Museum?

Rencong and Knife Dagger

One part of this museum that is very interesting is the weapons section. I wonder what kind of weapon that my ancestors used to had. There on at the display are Rencong, which is a unique knife that slightly curls at the handle and is slightly bent on the blade, usually decorated with ornaments like Acehnese bamboo shoots. The plans of the kings and the royal officials of Aceh Darussalam were made of gold and silver to copper and bronze.

In the beautiful knives on display in this glass box, I can see the writing of the sentence calligraphy hamdalah. And there are also silver-stemmed rencong that are beautifully carved in Aceh. These knives even though they are on display or out of the glass displays are not allowed to be touched.

Bulletproof Shield

One of the other unique weapons and only this time I saw it from other museums in many places: A shields who can deflect firing bullets. Amazing. The shape is also very strange. That is curling inward, really different from most shields. This bulletproof shield is made of very hard wood. If this shield research is made it will be a truly extraordinary military discovery and can be developed.

Ancient Manuscripts & Handwritten Al-Quran From 17th Century

The ancient manuscripts were also written by Acehnese scholars such as fiqh books, and handwritten Qur'an, which was used by members of the Aceh Darussalam royal family to read and study it. On each page decorated with beautiful ornaments on each side. Since the past Acehnese people love knowledges, so many books in various fields have been written and they are memorized. Memorizing knowledges is part of their study and they are very obedient to their teachers. But it is very different from Aceh today where interest in reading and writing of its people has diminished considerably, so that Aceh today is not as great as Aceh in the past.

Ancient Aceh Tribe's Kitchenware

Acehnese civilization is not a backward tribe when viewed from their heritage. They have been able to make tools that support their daily lives. One of the important ones is eating and drinking equipment. Here there are dry food storage jars such as rice jars and fairly large wheat. I also saw small 'dimples', which were spice pounders and drug pounders. Nor did you miss the sponge cake mold from Aceh called 'bhoi'.

This is a large barrel that serves as a storage for drinking water, as well as liquid food such as honey and sweets. Some of these pottery are simple brown and some have blue moringa leaves. These storage jars serve as cooling food ingredients so as not to stale. Like chocolate pottery, which was found buried on the post-ocean royal site in northern Aceh, these pottery also functioned the same to store water or food ingredients.

Other objects are metal tools for storing jewelry, betel leaves, cloves, lime, there are also for storing important papers, until the brass brass spit the betel nut chew that cannot be eaten. On the plates of small bowls where the betel is usually used on certain occasions such as when welcoming guests, weddings, circumcision events, and other events.

Clothes And Ornaments

Did the Acehnese wear clothes at that time? Yes, even they have produced their own clothes woven with beautiful patterns, called Songket Aceh. There is a bamboo shoot motif also a gayo filigree motif. In addition, the Acehnese women, especially the royal family members, wear jewelry such as anklets, wristbands, carved metal belts, and necklaces. Here are some examples of beautiful metal waist straps. Currently in the Acehnese community, all the above jewelry is only used on special events like wedding ceremony.
