That time I Traveled the Caribbean

in #travel6 years ago (edited)

Hello steemians this is my first post for today, an unusually late one for me since joining Steemit.

Today I would like to share with you my first time traveling, overseas that is. Please follow me on this journey. lol

I was selected to attend the 5th Methodist Churches in the Caribbean and the Americas (MCCA) Youth Encuentro in St. Kitts and Nevis. I was very excited as I have always wanted the experience of being on a plane even if it was to represent my church district.

We left Jamaica at 3pm and arrived in Antigua by 5pm. Surprisingly I found the plane ride quite annoying because I didnt like sitting 30,000ft in the air for 2 long hours and it didn't help that I wasn't given the window seat.

We arrived in Antigua and only stayed there for about an hour or so waiting for another smaller plane to carry us over to St. Kitts where we were received by members of the host nation's encuentro team who would then take us to where we would be staying for the night.

The Youth Encuentro is all about the youhs of the chuch being given a voice to share their views and concerns about the church and to also select youth leaders for the region. One great positive was being able to meet and connect with others from the many different islands in the Caribbean and learning their different cultures. We were told of how encuentro had developed relationships both casual and intima

We visited Brimstone Hill which was once fortress built by slaves. It was used by the British as a lookout point for war ships coming in by sea.

We left St. Kitts and traveled by ferry to its sister island of Nevis for the weekend to conduct a open air meeting in the town square where we fellowshipped with the locals there. The ferry ride was very unpleasant for me and some of my delegates from Jamaica as we became sick.

We returned to St. Kitts to conclude the proceedings of the Youth Encuentro which was a real good experience for me. I learned a lot about the Methodist church and its operations.

Unfortunately we had to again travel on the ferry but this time it was to the island of Montserrat which I learned was an English colony. W were given pardons into the island as we did not have any British visas and the President's wife was conveniently a member of the Methodist church.

While in we visited the site of the devastating volcano which destroyed almost half of the island. We also enjoyed some leisure time where I was able to play some basketball and even get a chance to take some pictures if iguanas.
