A short trip to Sicily, Italy - Taormina - Siracusa - Catania, and how to get most of your timesteemCreated with Sketch.

in #travel6 years ago (edited)

It is a pity if you only have 3 (not even) days to visit Sicily but so it happened that we had a possibility to go there for this short period of time, so we thought we would get the most of it.

TIP 1. Less is more.
If you have limited time in a huge place, then better choose less locations but so you have more time to spend there and actually get to know the place.

Without doubt, Taormina had to be on the must see list. So right after we landed in Catania airport and got some arancini to fuel our energy up we went straight to this marvellous place. Just a tiny little bit you can see in pictures below.

This is not Taormina, these are our delicious arancini - fried rice balls filled with ragu or mozarella, or ham or whatever you please.

TIP 2. Use your contacts.
Knowing someone who lives in a specific place not only lets you save money on accommodation but also lets you learn about what is going on in the city - must sees, must does and so on. We were lucky enough that my dear friend lived in Siracuse so the next choice was quite clear. We would go there and see what it can offer (apart from seeing my friend whom I have not seen for more than a year!!!). And indeed, not only did we get to go a bit outside of Siracuse to explore the rocky cliffs but also got to visit the exhibition of the amazing photographer Steve McCurry! And we got to eat a lot of Italian street food, and Italian street (fish) food is to die for!

The photo below is one of our all time favourites - shot by Steve McCurry. It was such a fascinating feeling to see it in a large print!

TIP 3. Relaxed stroll through the city is also tourism

Considering that we had our last day left and a plane to catch at 16.00 we were left with little time to explore Catania, a city from which we had our flight back. It is wonderful place and even a full day would be waay to little to explore it thoroughly. So we decided to not stress it and just to blend in, on the way discovering what it has to offer - San Birillo quarter, fish market, food and the vibe of the city itself.

All in all, not bad for 2.5 days, right? We saw a lot but we also didn't feel the pressing need to run anywhere either, and that is the ultimate thing - tourism is for enjoyment and not for stress. More often than not, many forget that. So don't and enjoy your time while traveling instead of worrying of how to get to the next destination. :)

Oh it is indeed, and there is so so much to it than pictures show!

looks like an amazing place. i see you incorporated some of the tips brought up by folks on the chat. your own tips are wise... knowing folks for certain is ideal.
man that picture with the ladies in red all huddled together with the dying trees, pottery and smoke...what was going on in that moment? it is a phenomenal shot

Hey! Thank you! yes indeed, I try to listen and act accordingly! Nicely noticed!
And thanks for bringing up the amusement with the picture of ladies, it is the picture of Steve McCurry, the photographer! I should make it explicit in my post! I could only wish of being able to photograph something that beautiful! Sorry for the confusion! Will edit it right away in the post. But for now I would really advise you to google Steve McCurry work because it is 100% phenomenal!

ok yeah... lucky i caught that. i would give credit below. the shot or at end of the article. it is fine to use if credit is giving. but there are several steemitabuse folks out there and cheetah that are reeking havoc on peeps reps. and you just shot up like crazy so it'd be a shame to lose it. just hit edit and throw it in there. my buddy in the real world @almondbutter got stung by cheetah in his first week. it was an honest mistake... my friend is not a plagiarizer... he was just a noob and he got hit 12 rep points down and was below 20 rep. being under 25 is like the plague and folks avoid you...difficult to get back up...though possible. unfortunately for my friend...he lost interest in steemit because of it. honestly its too bad for steemit ...cause he is a great guy with lots to offer. i keep nudging at him to get back in.
but yeah ill check out steve McCurry's work. thanks

thank you for advice! Haven't realized that mentioning him in the story is not enough but totally agree that it should be explicit who shot what. Done! :)

Cool post. I went to Sicily for 10 days and it still wasn't enough!
