TRAVELOGUE: Big boy's toys ~ a tank in the neighbourhood (Germany Feb 2017)

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

Some time ago, I was introduced to a guy who loves the military themed stuff. His name is Pete. He was always in his military pants, jacket (but I don't think he was in the army though). He spoke fluent English, a rare delight in this land of only German and Saarland dialects. He always drove his military jeep (a Willy's Jeep I think). One day, he told the old guys on the breakfast table in a local restaurant that he was working on a panzer (yea, that's the German word for a tank). We were all in awe. Since then, everybody started calling him Panzer Pete.

So one day, we took a detour after breakfast to go to Panzer Pete's place, to see if the tank was REALLY there. Lo and behold, I felt like I went into the big boy's playground. It was rather small a workshop, but maybe the vehicles were HUGE. Sorry about the lights, I wasn't very good with photography haha.

Here's a view in his workshop

The tank was done up just like it was in the battlefield. I didn't check the boxes, probably are empty, but it did look good huh?

There were two of these trucks in the workshop, another one outside the workshop.

Couldn't resist a tourist selfie hahaha~

He had a jeep he drove everyday, and he's working one another one. That's him with the huge beard, sorry he's shy haha.

Here's another he had not started repair yet. According to him, there was another in a workshop elsewhere for sandblasting. These vehicles are bought by him, and he wasn't working on these for anyone, but he said he would sell them if there were interested parties. He had sold a couple of jeeps though. However, the panzer/tank was not for sale haha.

This week he was preparing his panzer for an exhibition in UK in the weekend. He's scheduled to load his panzer on a truck today to ship it to UK for an exhibition. Wow~~

There were other accessories that he had, like this jerry can.

Air rifle (since it's illegal to own a proper weapon in Germany)

World War II bayonet (probably picked up when the army were retreating after the war)

It was indeed a great tour, although I didn't get to take a ride or fire a tank hahahaha, okay, that was wishful thinking, but yea...

Sort:
