Our Journey up the Queensland Coast of Australia. Part #1

Hi guys,

Recently my wife Candice and I celebrated our 3rd year anniversary and we always try to go away for it. This year we decided we would take our newly bought Prado from the Gold Coast to Cooktown as a camping retreat to get away from it all. We gave ourselves 2 weeks which we knew would be a rush but we were up for the challenge.

We started by getting to Hervey Bay about 4hrs drive North to see Candice's dad, since we don't see him often. For those of you who love ice cream, there is a ice creamery in town called Planet 72 which sells 72 flavours of the best ice cream I have ever had.

After our overnight stay we began our trip by driving to Agnes Water where we set up at a popular camp site close to the beach. We decided to set up early since this would be the first time we set up our awning tent and the rest of our get up. It seems long discussions about random crap really bring people close together haha...

Morning comes and we head down to the beach for an early walk...

Once we had had breakfast, it was in the car and a short 20min drive up to Seventeen Seventy (1770). This is where Captain James Cook first discovered Australia on 24th May 1770. The peninsula provides some stunning views and a statement landmark of Captain James' landing.

After seeing these views, we knew we were in for a great trip full of awesome stuff to see. The best part of our trip was knowing we could sleep where ever we wanted which means we didn't have to rush to a booking at a campsite. We could travel as fast or as slow as we wanted which was a great feeling for us. We are so used to being in a routine that the freedom felt strange but relieving.

Next stop, even though it was to a mechanic (inner CV boots had completely torn off) was Rockhampton for a 2 and a half hour delay while the Prado was fixed. Could have been a lot worse so we were thankful to be out of there just before dark.

We made the joint decision to stop at St Lawrence and we arrived to set up camp around 8pm. Waking up to Kangaroos within 10m of your camp never seems to get old. It was so quiet that you could hear the murmurs of the closest campers which were still at least 30m away. Great views and even better weather to spend the morning without saying a word... the surroundings spoke in volumes...
