Bandung

Reading about recent volcanic activities in Hawaii(Mount Kilauea) and Indonesia(Mount Rinjani), I am reminded of our first trip to Bandung in Indonesia. We used to visit Bandung every year as there are many factory outlets and shopping is so affordable.

Sorry, I tend to digress when the topic of shopping is mentioned. Despite our passion for shopping, we also indulge in good food and devote some time to sightseeing.

One of the popular tourist attractions we visited was Mount Tangkuban Parahu, an inactive volcano. We were pretty excited as none of us had ever been to one. I had checked Trip Advisor and most comments were positive.

The volcano is about 2,000 metres high and is accessible by car or motorbike. Our driver drove us right to the edge of the crater. Locals and tourists milled around the edge to view the hot water springs and boiling mud.

Some tourists and their guide trekked about a mile down to the crater to dip their feet in the hot springs and even boil some eggs there. I only managed to get a quick look and a couple of snapshots. It was too misty and the foul smelling sulphuric vapour almost unbearable.

There are homes and shops selling souvenirs and food around the edge of the crater rim.

After an hour or so, the driver took us to a centre where there is a pool piped with natural hot spring water. We had a good foot massage and then soaked ourselves in the pool. It was initially rather scary as the water was hot but after a while it felt rather pleasant.

On the way back to Bandung, we stopped at a cool Sudanese restaurant called Kampung Daun. The ambience is awesome; a large garden filled with tropical plants, ponds, and charming pegolas or little huts giving privacy to diners get to enjoy their scrumptious meal.

As mentioned earlier, there are several factory outlets in Bandung but the one I like best is called Rumah Mode. It's shopping till we drop. Rumah Mode is one of a kind store. Well stocked and so much variety. Husbands and those who do not have the intrinsic shopping energy like some of us will absolutely not mind being at the store.

Non shoppers can always sit at the food court to enjoy snacks and coffee or even hang around the marvellous garden filled with plants and fish ponds. I am an avid shopper but my friends are unbeatable. After paying for some big plastic bags filled with clothes, I had to wait around the food court and garden for an hour before my friends surface from the store! Fortunately, I could just dump my bags into the waiting van (our driver was patiently waiting) instead of having to carry them around.
