The Saxon Switzerland National Park offers one of the best views in Europe.

           To the uninitiated tourist, a name like Saxon Switzerland National Park ( SSN park ) is a dead giveaway for its location. This beautiful park is, in fact, located in Saxony, Germany contrary to common misconceptions. That is the only thing confusing about it to the casual observer, everything else about the park speaks of beauty and splendor that even the most hapless can appreciate.

The park is known for its stunning sandstone rock formations, canyons, and amazing scenery. Hiking and biking are recommended activities to fully enjoy the park.

       There are several airports that service the park namely Prague, Leipzig-Altenburg, Leipzig, and Dresden. The Germany Railway, also called Deutsche Bahn, runs through Leipzig and Dresden airports so these are the airports that will be most convenient for a trip to Saxon Switzerland. 

       The park has several entry points depending on where you want to explore first. Pirna and Bad Shandau are the most common stops used by visitors to the park. From Pirna, you can take bus #237 if you want to see the Bastei Bridge or bus #241 if you want to see Fortress Königstein. Stop by Bad Schandau you want to see the sandstones and the canyons. From using the Deustche Bahn, you will need to switch to the S-Bahn. 

Purchase a VVO ticket online worth 12.50 euro or at least 15USD, so you won’t need to worry about running out of fares.

      Hiking or biking are preferred by visitors in exploring the park. If you would rather save your energy, Saxon Switzerland National Park is unique in being able to offer boat rides and old tram rides. Boat rides are along the Elbe River which stops along several scenic points of the park. If you want something more quaint and nostalgic, take the tram ride that runs along Bad Schandau and Lichtenhain waterfalls.

       It can be pretty overwhelming once you set out to explore Saxon Switzerland, but here are a number of spots you should not miss. Bastei Bridge is one of the most famous landmarks in the region. The Bastei area in itself offers breathtaking views of spectacular rock formations and the flowing Elbe River. 

You can hike the Golden Triangle trail that stretches from Rathen to Stadt Wehlen. If pressed for time, you can bring your car and simply pay a 5-euro parking fee. Bastei in itself is free though. If you want a little bit of history, visit Königstein Fortress and you will be amazed by its 12th century architecture and its well-kept grounds.

        There is an admission fee of 8-euros or at least $9 for adults; it is cheaper for children or when you visit in a group. Many hiking and biking trails pepper Saxon Switzerland National Park so you can explore it depending on your time and your desired level of difficulty. A lot of visitors though recommend the Malerweg Route so you can fully marvel at the Elbe Sandstone Mountains.
