My trip in Volterra! I love Tuscany!

in #travel6 years ago (edited)

Here I am talking to you a little about the beauties of my land, Tuscany! Italy is beautiful, but from an old campanilista let me tell you, Tuscany is not simply beautiful it's awesome!

Today I want to talk to you about a city where i worked for a day  but where I always leave my heart: Volterra!

Located in the province of Pisa, land where we Pistoiesi ( people from Pistoia)  we enter a little due to ancient disagreements.  In fact for those who do not know in Pistoia we have a saying "Better a dead man at home than a pisano ( people from Pisa) at the door" this to make you understand how much sympathy runs between Pisa and Pistoia.  Volterra shows in its composition the passage of various historical periods, its typical stratification brings many tourists to the city to admire it.  Early Etruscan Volterra, to date is still visible what remains of the ancient acropolis of Velatri (original name of Volterra) where they still work, then Roman, boasts a long history marked by small wars and disagreements, the first major defeat for the city was because of their alliance with Mario during the war with Silla who won and created various damages to Volterra.

 The old acropolys.

With the arrival of the first barbarian invasions, the city was forced to fortify itself to protect itself. In the fifth century it became a vascular seat and since then the bishops had great influence on the city in the centuries to come.
In the year one thousand forms a free commune by putting himself against the bishop's power and winning thanks to close alliances with Siena and Florence.
During this period, the Palazzo dei Priopri was erected and the walls were rebuilt, the palace and the square where it stood became a symbol of popular power.

 Palazzo dei Priori

Will turn during the Renaissance allied with the Medici, alliance that yielded problems to the city, fortunately mitigated by their commercial strength, very strong thanks to the trade and processing of alabaster, still today you can find various objects in alabaster for sale in many shops of the cit

Currently Volterra feeds on tourism its lifeblood, there are many museums to visit, the art gallery and of course the main buildings and towers. I invite you to get lost in the very small streets and in the most typical alleys where you will find pretty restaurants and shops, all walking on paved streets with stones, you will feel like walking the streets of a fantasy novel!  Very special is the museum of torture in which I recommend a small ride if you are strong stomach!

La Toscana è davvero stupenda, spero di poterci fare un salto questa estate.
Abitando in Svizzera mi devo organizzare bene, ma spero davvero di poter venire a godermi un po' di sole e tranquillità. Grazie del tuo post!
