Akureyri in Iceland - what to see and what to do

Akureyri is the largest city in northern Iceland. At the southern end of the Eia Fjord, among the snow-capped peaks, is this small town. Due to the city's geographic location, the climate here is characterized by large temperature changes with warm winters and warm summers. It is worth noting that today, buying a tour and going on a relatively cheap holiday for Iceland is easy, and anyone can arrange a wonderful holiday in this northern state.

The city is surrounded on almost all sides by mountain peaks and slopes, well protected from the strong north wind of the townspeople. The extinct volcano Sulur is the highest mountain in the region adjacent to Akureyri. The height of this natural wonder about 1200 meters.

The history of the city began with the IX century, when the first Vikings began to fill this, at that time completely empty, the ground. The name of the city Akureyri appeared in a historical source in 1562. In 1786, the King of Denmark gave Akureyri the status of the city.

Any music fan organ can enjoy sounds that generate as many as 3200 pipes - this is an unspeakable experience! The main stained glass window of the temple was borrowed from Coventry Cathedral. Thanks to the famous architect from Iceland Gudyounu Samuelson the architectural structure of the city mesmerizes with its beauty and high level of craftsmanship.

Around Akureyri there is extraordinary beauty in Lake Meevant. It occupies the edge of the volcanic belt at an altitude of 278 meters and never freezes, regardless of the season and temperature around it. In the same area, before the travelers, the open Godafoss open waterfall, which means "the waterfall of the Gods", is connected to the history of the baptism of Icelandic citizens. The waterfall was semicircular, low, but rather wide. Many tourists are staying for a long time under the impression of a miraculous nature creation.
