How to Vacation in Nigeria and Have a Blast

If you are thinking of vacationing in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, and having a memorable time, you must attend at least one of its numerous festivals. Most of them hold annually in different regions of the country. Just plan your vacation to coincide with one and you are sure to have a great time.

The Calabar carnival in the city of Calabar, Cross-Rivers state, southern Nigeria, is held in the month of December every year. The city is peaceful, fun loving, and never sleeps. Not far from that city is a world-class mountain resort located in a place known as Obudu. Europeans and other visitors not from temperate regions of the world love the weather there. You won’t ever need air conditioning while there. It is not a place you would enjoy going to alone though unless you are the kind of person that goes camping and mountain climbing by yourself. There are cable cars to take you from one part of the mountain to the other. The lodgings there are beautiful huts that look like traditional African homes but with modern furnishing and quality room service.

The Osun-Osogbo festival holds in the month of August every year. Worshipers from within and outside Nigeria come to pray to the Osun river goddess, offer sacrifices and give thanks for blessings.

Apparently, she is a benevolent goddess that is kind to all who come to her. A lot of people especially from the Americas who have Yoruba origin make a pilgrimage there. If you come before or after the festival you will be able to see the grove well. It is a very spiritual sight to behold.

Up north, you may like the Argungu festival in Kebbi state which started in the year 1934. The most spectacular feature of the festival is its popular fishing competition.

The river in the community which people are not allowed to fish from is declared open once in a year and everybody dives in aiming to make the biggest catch. No one is allowed to use modern fishing tools. Whoever catches the biggest fish is rewarded with prize money.

There are lots of side attractions that surround it which keeps people there for days. Unfortunately, because of Boko Haram’s love for large gatherings, the festival has not held since 2009. But the emir of the town has said it will hold next year.
