Hostels seem great for shorter travels but I could imagine that gets expensive if you're on the road for months at a time. I have been a host on warm showers but haven't used it as a guest yet. I will when I find a feasible easy to do a longer trip. I tend to plan around free or cheap hiker biker campsites usually.
Yes the Irony is that sometimes the free options could be even better. I've been using warmshowers a lot and they still contain some of my best memories :)
