RE: Canadian Rockies: Sunwapta & Athabasca Falls

Sorry for the ignorance, but what are bear bells and bear sprays? Do you strike the bell and the bear goes away? Do you spray the bear, like a pepper spray or do you spray yourself and the smell is offensive to the bear?

lol this is too cute 😍 . The bell is just a loud annoying bell you wear and it jingles when you walk. Most bears do not want to encounter humans and if they know you are near, they will go away to avoid confrontation because we are their predator. The bell alerts them of human presence coming and they leave the area before humans get there so no surprise instead of having to talk all the time just for the sake of making noise. There is also bear flare, it's a blank that sounds like gun fire to scare the bear and make it run away if there is an encounter ( that one is not allowed in national parks because they can cause fire but can be used everywhere else). Bear spray is a large can of pepper spray in case the bear attacks, then you spray it in their eyes and it gives you time to get away. It's illegal to bring guns in a national park or injure any wildlife so the items listed above are your defense/prevention measures. Thanks for asking, not many know this even people that live here. 😊

Thank you for the explanation.

Lol, don't feel dumb @ronaldoavelino
I kind of had the same experience when I went to Canada. We never bought any of these things because the prices and the stories of some of the locals. But that was mainly because we traveled during high season. Lots of tourist scared the bears away for us. However, my gf and I still encountered a baby bear on our path and we didn't spot momma bear at all. Pretty breath taken I can tell you. So keep asking questions and we try to answer them all.
