Afternoon stroll in Mauritius

IMG_9971.jpg
The one afternoon while on vacation, in Mauritius we decided to take a leisurely stroll to the nearby town of Belle-Mare. Most of the people in Mauritius are Hindu's and one can see religious objects and small temples everywhere along the streets. We walked close to the beach and found the temple shown in the photos below. The photo on top of the page was taken just next to the temple, and I am not sure if it is also from the Hindu religion.

I don't know what the statues mean, but from my perspective they are quite weird. Just look at the detail of the one below, it has a necklace of sculls around the neck, with another scull in the one hand, while standing on a person with a snake around the neck, and just look at those teeth and tong!!

All the statues were in the same temple in different rooms next to each other. (I did not post photos off all the statues.)

The beautiful beach was just a few meters further on from the temple, which was basically built on the rocks!!

We strolled through this beautiful tree lined path.

The ocean and beach next to the path is really beautiful!!

While walking we stumbled onto this monument, which was erected in memory of the tragic event of the Helderberg crashing into the sea in 1987, killing all 159 people on board. If you would like to read more about the Helderberg Crash you can click on the link. The Helderberg was a South-African 747 that crashed under suspicious circumstances and it is quite interesting to read the history.

We also stumbled onto this building, which looks like an old military fort, but there was no signs confirming this!!

Below is a view of a street in between the houses, through which we walked. Mauritius is a rather poor country, as you can see by the houses and the very narrow streets. The hotels are supper luxurious, but the town is poor. I also visited a town named Phoenix, where the conditions looked better.

Below is a small shop in the town of Belle-Mare. For me Mauritius was very expensive, I would say between 2 and 3 time more expensive than South-Africa.

On our way back we saw this small snack shop under the trees.

It was a very nice experience, to just walk to town and see what the normal people do in their daily lives. There are also some informal shops along the road that sells a variety of stuff, but for some reason, I did not photograph one. My wife actually, bought a sarong at one. Although I am not use to it, one must negotiate on the price, otherwise you will pay far to much!!

I hope you liked my post as much as I enjoyed writing it!!

The photos, were taken with my iPhone, in the town of Belle-Mare, in Mauritius.
