Smögen, Sweden - feels like a Wes Anderson film
I remember coming to the little coastal town of Smögen when I was a small child during the summer when my mom would drag us through Sweden alone (I don’t know how she did it).
Smögen is located on the west coast of Sweden. With a population of only around 1,500 people the town transforms during summer months flooding the 2,000 ft long peir with tourists. There are cafes and shops that are inside old fishing huts. Of course it’s known for its fish, prawns and is home to one of Sweden’s few fish markets.
The name of the town as varied over many years, since the 16th century, “Smögit”, “Smöenn”, “Smöget” and “Smygesund.” It’s believed to come from the Swedish word smyghål meaning sinkhole or nook, referring to its narrow inlet between the Smögen island and where the harbor lies.
Being back here after at least 8 years brings back a lot of memories as a child. I was lucky enough to visit in May just before tourist season so there weren’t many people and my mom was able to get her shrimp sandwich that she was so happy to eat again.
