Pagoda in The Second area of Tongdo-sa Temple steemCreated with Sketch.

in #travel6 years ago

There was an unique pagoda in front of the Gwaneum-Jeon hall.

This pagoda seemed the representative pagoda of Goryeo dynasty.
That was 5 story pagoda, its shape was similar to the 3 story pagoda of Bulguk-sa temple, Seokga-tap pagoda which was built in Shilla dynasty preceded 500 years to Goryeo dynasty.

But in my guess, even though the 5 story pagoda in Tongdo-sa was more splendid and had more stories, the 3 story pagoda in Bulguk-sa temple looked more perfect in the shape and the form.

They carved various shape in foundation stone. This pagoda has two story of the foundation which was similar to the pagodas in Shilla dynasty
There were some patterns on the surface of the first story, those patterns and shapes seemed to be relating to the protection for Buddhism.

In some points, the pagoda in front of the Gwaneum-jeon inherited from the 3 story pagoda in Bulguk-sa.
Especially the dual foundation style and the eavesdrop could be suggested as the proof of continuation of Shilla pagoda style.
I could not figure these shapes out with my poor knowledge, and it was sorry there were no explanation about that.

People seemed to try to make more splendid pagoda than before. Even though the pagodas in Goryeo dynasty. But I could not find out the perfection of the harmony and the balance in its shape what I found out in the pagoda in Bulguk-sa.

What made the artists in Goryeo dynasty lose the feeling of the perfection ?

Anyway this 5 story pagoda was the main symbol in second area of Tongdo-sa.

The arrangement of this pagoda in the second area was really excellent. The location of the pagoda looked the center of the second area. And it is located in front of Daewung-jeon hall at the same time.

Those were really meaningful Pagodas because they teach the people history and beliefs with their structures and symbolism @slowwalker Maybe in the far future we could see some Pagodas that are made from metal too but possibly I will be not around anymore by then.
