Prehistory of the Pruszcz Gdanski area
In the past, Pruszcz Gdański was located on a lagoon lake, guaranteeing direct connection with the sea. Thus, this area was one of the final points on the route linking the amber-bearing Baltic coast with the Roman Empire. The location above the lake at the time influenced both the development of commercial contacts and enriched the inhabitants' diet with products of marine origin. In addition to hydrological factors, the development of settlements was influenced by favorable lowland terrain, as well as the fertile soils of the borderland between the Żuławy Wiślane and the East Pomeranian Coast. Between the second century BC and 5th century, e. the area of today's Pruszcz Gdański, as well as its immediate vicinity, was one of the most significant settlement complexes of Pomerania. The found relics of buildings and necropolises underline how strongly developed economically and socially were the population living in this area, identified with Oksywska and Wielbarska cultures in turn. The surroundings of Pruszcz were an important center of provincial and long-distance trade. Thanks to the archaeological analysis of numerous and large-scale cemeteries, it is known that the region was characterized by a very dense population. Numerous coin finds, as well as goods and objects imported from the Roman Empire found in Pruszcz, point to a significant role of commercial contacts, connecting with a substantial amount of goods that local residents had to offer to newcomers. In addition, the richly equipped graves provide a high level of society.
