Peshawar (Pashto: پېښور‎ )About this sound pronunce , Urdu: پشاور‎‎ About this sound pronunce (help·info), Hindko: پشور) is the capital of the Pakistani province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.[5] It also serves as the administrative centre and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas.

Situated in a broad valley near the eastern end of the historic Khyber Pass, close to the border with Afghanistan, Peshawar's recorded history dates back to at least 539 BCE, making it the oldest city in Pakistan and one of the oldest in South Asia. Peshawar was the capital of the ancient Kushan Empire, and was home to what may have been the tallest building in the ancient world, the Kanishka stupa. Peshawar was then sacked by the White Huns, before the arrival of Muslim empires. The city was an important trading centre during the Mughal era before serving as capital for the Durrani Empire.

With a population of 1,970,042 according to the 2017 census, Peshawar is the largest city in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the sixth-largest in Pakistan.

The mosque is named after the Mughal governor of Peshawar, Nawab Mahabat Khan bin Ali Mardan Khan, known alternatively as Mahabat Khan and Ali Mardan Khan, who served under Emperors Shah Jehan and Aurangzeb.

Bab-e-Khyber. The Khyber Gate was built in 1964, at the mouth of the Khyber Pass, where the Jamrud Fort is also located.

Notwithstanding obvious signs of ageing, the Khyber Gate still presents an imposing sight.

The towering structure stands at Jamrud and serves as the entrance of the historic Khyber Pass, used as passage to South Asia by kings, invaders, barbarians and smugglers since time immemorial.

The pass has been witness to the Macedonian armies of Alexander, the tartar warriors of Genghis Khan, the soldiers of the legendary Mahmood of Ghazna, Ahmad Shah Abdali and countless others. The pass represents more than history; it represents the ruthless progression of time.It was to acknowledge the importance of this passage that a gate of gray-brown brick, the Bab-e-Khyber, was constructed in the early 60s and inaugurated by president Ayub Khan on June 11, 1963. With time, the gate has become a symbol of the NWFP and its tribal belt.
