Chasing Waterfalls

My friend invited me as they are set to go to the southern part of Cebu, Philippines. Ecstatic and excited as I was, I finally saw the Kawasan falls in Badian, Cebu. It is famous for its 3 level waterfalls and other small or mini waterfalls as you trek your way to each level. You can enjoy the cold water of the river and get a good view of the waterfalls or you can do some adventure like Canyoneering.

Per Wikipedia, "Canyoning is the sport of exploring a canyon by engaging in such activities as rappelling, rafting, and waterfall jumping." It is famously known as Canyoneering in the US. And if you don't know yet, it is also famous here in Cebu, especially in Badian. This celebrated municipality in the province of Southern Cebu owns the water treasures we call Kawasan Falls and Matutinao River. Specifically located at Barangay Matutinao, we started the downstream canyoneering at the Matutinao River. But first, we suited up - for safety, we wore helmet, life vest and trekking/Aqua shoes!

Kawasan Falls is one of the most popular waterfalls in Cebu and is located in Barangay Matutinao, Badian at the southwest part of the province. It is also just an hour away from Moalboal, which makes it an ideal nature side-trip after a day at the beach. Kawasan has two main waterfalls that are both deep enough for swimming. The first set of falls has a height of over 40 meters, while the second set has a wider area with a height of 20 meters. There is a small third falls a few kilometers away from the second one but is rarely frequented by tourists. The water from the Kawasan Falls comes from the Kabukalan Spring and passes through the Matutinao River and Tanon Strait. The Kawasan Falls is managed by the local government, they
work hand-in-hand with the locals to make sure that waterfalls is regularly maintained and well-
preserved.

We arrived there mid morning. We parked our car, from then walked 20-30mins to where the first level of the waterfalls is. As we pass by, it's just amazing seeing the clear waters of the river making its way through to the sea. It is a refreshment, a breath of fresh air.

There were already people ahead, enjoying themselves swimming, eating, chatting and taking pictures with the falls as their backdrop. Now, I got to see it
with my own eyes and indeed it is beautiful.

The 1st level:

Off we went to the 2nd level. And good thing the walk going up isn't that hard though you'll still be panting tired. Along the way you will see the flow of the river and a few mini falls that you get to enjoy too and have yourself freshened up from the trek.

The 2nd level:

My apologies my friends. I realized I actually forgot to take photos of the 2nd level waterfalls so I just downloaded a couple of photos from the internet. My bad.

Along side the 2nd level, you will also have this around the corner.

One is allowed to jump here (above photo), on this part.

We rested a bit and started again the trek going to the 3rd level. Though my body and feet, especially my knees, are trying to hurt, we still proceeded on reaching the last level. Idea is to just freshen up along the way and take a quick dip in the cold water to kick start your energy for a continued walk.

Finally, 3rd level:

There is a part of the 3rd level that is somehow hidden behind the trees and branches and I can't capture it since I'm across and a bit far. Of course, there are tourists and these are the ones who did the canyoneering all the way from the top from where the 3rd level is situated. The canyoneering adventurers just kept arriving as we stayed for quite some time. And we did enjoy looking at them having fun with the activities. They enjoyed the slide, the tarzan swing and jumping over an edge of the rock that is on the other side.
This is the source of the waterfalls. The water in this level is a bit colder than the others and the strip is longer too. The only people that goes to this part are the ones who did the outdoor adventure and like us who hiked and climbed up to the main source, unlike the 1st level where people flock and just stay there for the most part of their visit thus only wants to savor and enjoy the first level.

Walk. Rest. Relax, so on and so forth. You walk literally in the woods. In silence, you can JUST hear birds chirping, gush of the river flowing and chatters from tourists too. Since you are in the woods, it is & always believed that spirits, good or evil, dwells in the place. So, you have to keep the noise down so as not to disturb the evil spirits specially or in our dialect, "engkanto" or ghost to poke fun or harm at people.

Even with a dead tired body after, I most definitely enjoyed it. I had so much fun even if it was sore all throughout for a first timer. Another beauty, and there I was, Chasing Waterfalls.
