Museo Casa de la Memoria en Medellin

Museo Casa de la Memoria, which means the victims of violence museum. Medellin was considered to be the most dangerous city in the world especially during the 1980's and many of thousands of people lost their lives during this decade and into the early 90's. I am sure that most people when they think of Colombia they think of Pablo Escobar, the drugs and the drug lords that destroyed countless lives and families. However, the violence began a lot earlier than that and Colombia has been in a violent civil war for over the past 6 decades and this memorial talks about it all. From drugs, drug lords, other crime and various violent parties struggling for control. It talks and shows you the survivors and tells you their stories. It has beautiful artistic displays that talk about the struggles people faced, the brave people who stood up to those violent people regardless of their own personal welfare and that the violence was aimed at everyone regards of their social status. It is an eye opening experience, one that we should all see for ourselves

It is an eerily and beautiful message that acknowledges the struggles and difficult times that this city and its people have been through and they are well aware they do indeed still have a long road a head of them. The point of the memorial is to remember those times and remember the countless lives that have been affected. The museum itself was first decided to be complete back in 2003 but only was officially opened in 2013! This was due to numerous set backs with politics and funding amongst factors.

This was the final display at the end of the entire memorial ~ it resonated so well with me. To see, read and hear all of these stories, artistic displays and photos in the memorial and at the end of all of it a simple yet beautiful message

I can not recommend taking the time to go check this Memorial out enough, it is amazing! However, it is a tad depressing, as their are a lot of sad stories and it was unimaginable time for the people of Medellin that was only a few decades ago and the people today who were alive at that time all have stories.
